Although the total number of TB cases is falling worldwide, more dangerous strains appear to be proliferating

Despite steady progress since the year 2000 in reducing the overall spread of tuberculosis around the globe, TB still sickens nearly nine million men, women and children each year, killing at least 1.4 million, mostly in the poorer parts of the world. There is also worrisome evidence that some TB strains may be evolving into an even more dangerous cause of human suffering than most people, including many doctors, realize. Sally Lehrman marshaled the relevant data in her July Scientific American feature article "The Diabolical Genius of an Ancient Scourge."
Unless more is done to stop this unexpected chain of events, Lehrman wrote, " TB rates could one day begin rising again globally, and the disease could become harder to treat and spread more widely among populations that have so far been relatively free of the scourge."

An online assessment is use to gauge what the students have learned. Additionally, it employs Classroom technologies such as interactive whiteboards and personal response systems. One of the benefits of this program is that it provides an increased chance for dialogue between teachers and students. This in turn enhances the learning experience. Choosing the right online learning technology can be a daunting task. However, there are several online learning technologies that are worth checking out.
Teachers can employ messaging programs as video e-learning tools. These messaging programs include Adobe Connect and Skype. They are also used to interact with experts and guest speakers on a particular topic. At the same time, interactive games are steadily being included in many higher education and K-12 institution curriculums.
Although research on utilizing video as an online learning tool is preliminary, early research shows great results and increased retention when it is employed in a lesson. Utilizing a systematic video development approach holds a lot of promise for making video models that have a positive impact on student learning.
At the same time, audio is often employed to effectively explain visuals. Examples of visual learning tools may include maps and flow charts. This is because teachers are directing data to both the visual and auditory channels to effectively distribute the mental workload. Using snippets of audio about a subject being discussed also adds authenticity to the content.
Students can also utilize a blog to do everything that they usually do on paper. Some of these things include answering homework questions, receiving feedback on project drafts and reflecting on reading assignments. At the same time, teachers can use them to provide feedback using comments. Other students may also utilize them to provide qualitative feedback.
Another advantage is that it gives the presenter the capability to show their flow of thoughts and ideas rather than simply explaining them. This enables them to mimic one on one experience between the student and teacher. Mimicking this experience enables teachers to deliver complete and clear instruction.
From the learner?s point of view, it provides the capability to rewind and pause the lesson. This allows them to learn at their own pace.

Mexico might not be the first place you think of when it comes to lightweight, mid-engined, 2-seater, ?55k road and track cars. The new VUHL 05 indeed heralds from Mexico, but there?s a link to the Motor City of Detroit too, where the designers of the VUHL have an automotive design agency.
The insect-like, super-stripped VUHL 05 was penned and developed by Guillermo and Iker Echeverria; two Mexican brothers with racing and engineering passions inherited from their car-building and racing father. The brothers worked on projects for other firms before bringing the 05 to life, and the spec certainly sounds like a barrel of laughs.
The VUHL 05 has a now traditional monocoque chassis that weighs just 78kg on its own, but with everything else bolted to it still tips the scales at only 695kg, dry. That?s a great weight, especially when it?s backed up by a 285bhp motor. That?s 400bhp per ton, folks.
The chassis is made up from the latest and the lightest, with a three-section bonded tub built from aluminium extrusions and aluminium honeycomb. This material and building style is good enough for aeroplanes and helps the VUHL fly to over 150mph, and endows it with extreme levels of torsional rigidity. A twist-free chassis means that the suspension ? unequal length double wishbones front and rear ? can most accurately do its job, thanks to a set-up process that doesn?t have to account for too much chassis flex.
The standard body here is made from RTM reinforced plastic, but carbon fibre can be had as a more expensive and lighter option, and as we can see, this thing is bristling with aero. No doors ? you step in ? and the merest whiff of a windscreen, but, a flat underbody, front and lateral splitters, a rear diffuser and a low-level rear spoiler. A couple of years ago, this stripped-to-the-bone racer would?ve raised a eyebrows, but we?re all used to the Ariel Atom and KTM X-Bow now, with the VUHL?s predecessors proving that super-lightweight and reasonable power make for huge road and track fun.
The brothers picked a cracking engine for their 05 too, with the modern and torque-laden 2-litre Ford EcoBoost turbo motor mounted behind the two humans up front. It?s been boosted still further to 285bhp and 420Nm of torque, and that?s enough shove to fire the 05 to 62mph in 3.7 seconds.
The rest of the tech spec entices too with OZ lightweight alloy wheels ? 17-inch front and 18-inch rear ? and Brembo brake calipers biting big vented discs. Inside, we see a minimalist motorsport treat, with carbon fibre bucket seats, a quick-release suede steering wheel, an electronic data acquisition dash with an integral HD camera, as well as water-resistant Dinamica suede trim. And lots of pretty, bare aluminium too.
So, it looks good, sounds like it?s built to go good, and at a touch over ?50k is in the right ballpark for lightweight track day specialists. But, it?s up against some highly developed and established competition, so only a head-to-head with the best of the rest will confirm if the Echeverria brothers have really done the business. You can order one now and it?ll be delivered in the spring of 2014.

PARIS (Reuters) - A tycoon with ties to ex-president Nicolas Sarkozy was put under formal investigation on suspicion of fraud on Friday in connection with a 403 million-euro ($524 million) arbitration award he received in 2008 to settle a legal dispute.
The case against Bernard Tapie could damage Sarkozy's ability to mount a comeback for the 2017 election. Investigators are trying to determine whether close ties between members of Sarkozy's inner circle and Tapie influenced a 2007 government decision to turn to a private arbitration tribunal to settle a dispute with now-defunct bank Credit Lyonnais.
Tapie, 70, a colorful member of France's business and sporting elite, was placed under investigation on suspicion of organized fraud after being questioned by police over four days.
Earlier, the state-controlled body charged with settling the debts of Credit Lyonnais, the Consortium de Realisation (CDR), petitioned the Paris appeals court to throw out the settlement Tapie received, the agency's lawyer, Pierre-Olivier Sur, told Reuters.
Tapie, a supporter of Sarkozy in the past two presidential elections, has denied any wrongdoing in the long-running case which has embroiled members of Sarkozy's former cabinet including International Monetary Fund head Christine Lagarde, his former finance minister.
"I stress there is nothing in the case file to show the arbitration was the result of fraud," Tapie's lawyer, Herve Temime, told reporters after announcing the move to place his client under formal investigation.
Under French law, such a step means there is "serious or consistent evidence" pointing to likely implication of a suspect in a crime. It often, but not always, leads to a trial.
CONSERVATIVE HEADACHES
Socialist President Francois Hollande, who came to power last year vowing to do away with what he said were unfair advantages accorded the rich and well-connected, had signaled that his government planned to challenge the arbitration.
In order to nullify the settlement, judges would have to find evidence of fraud.
Tapie claimed that Credit Lyonnais defrauded him by buying his stake in sports company Adidas in 1993 for 315.5 million euros only to sell it a year later for 701 million euros.
The arbitration went in Tapie's favor with the 285-million-euro award which, with interest, amounted to 403 million euros.
Also under formal investigation is a former aide to Lagarde, Stephane Richard, now the chief executive of France Telecom, who plans to appeal the decision.
Investigating magistrates have made Lagarde a "supervised witness" in the case, a less serious step than a formal investigation that means she will answer questions as a witness in the presence of her lawyer in any future hearings.
The fraud-related investigation of Tapie and Richard increases the likelihood of a trial that could further tarnish the image of the conservative party, which lost power last year with Sarkozy's defeat to Hollande.
