(AP) ? New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (KWOH'-moh) says he's not talking about running for the Democratic nomination for president in 2016 and he's not waiting to see if Hillary Clinton runs.

Cuomo said Monday on public radio's "Capitol Pressroom" there is "no truth" to speculation that he is talking about presidential politics and strategy.

Cuomo says he's focused on his 2014 run for a second term as governor. He has never ruled out a run for president.

Clinton is often touted as a potential 2016 contender.

Cuomo has a campaign fund of more than $20 million and led New York's effort in legalizing same-sex marriage in 2011. This year, he pushed through the nation's first gun-control law after the Newtown, Conn., tragedy. His poll numbers have recently fallen from record highs.

Two police officers shot as Italian government sworn in

By Gavin Jones and Roberto Landucci

ROME (Reuters) - Two Italian police officers were shot and wounded on Sunday outside the prime minister's office in Rome at the same time as Prime Minister Enrico Letta's new government was being sworn in just a kilometer (mile) away.

It was not immediately clear whether the attack was linked to the launch of the new government, but the episode came at a time of bitter political division with rising social tensions exacerbated by a long economic slump.

Letta, 46, the moderate deputy head of the Democratic Party (PD), on Saturday ended two months of political stalemate following February's inconclusive election when he united former political rivals in a broad coalition government.

The mix of center-right and center-left politicians and unaffiliated technocrats was largely welcomed in Italy's mainstream press on Sunday, especially for the record of seven female ministers and the relatively young average age.

However, the political risks that Letta faces were spelled out on Sunday by a close ally of center-right leader Silvio Berlusconi who is a core stakeholder in the government.

Renato Brunetta, lower house leader of Berlusconi's People of Freedom party (PDL), said the government would fall unless Letta promised in his maiden speech to urgently abolish an unpopular housing tax and repay the 2012 levy to taxpayers.

Letta is expected to set out his government's plans in parliament on Monday and will then need to win a vote of confidence in both houses to be fully empowered.

"If the prime minister doesn't make this precise commitment we will not give him our support in the vote of confidence," Brunetta told daily Il Messaggero.

Brunetta, who was himself a candidate for the post of economy minister, said that during negotiations for the formation of the government Letta had "given his word" on the abolition and repayment of the tax, which would leave an 8 billion euros hole in public accounts.

However, on Sunday attention was focused on the dramatic shooting outside Palazzo Chigi, the prime minister's official residence, with several politicians warning that the fevered political climate may have contributed to the episode.

Luigi Preiti, in his forties, from the southern Italian region of Calabria, was arrested.

Having fired several shots at the two police on duty outside the prime minister's office, he shouted "shoot me, shoot me" to other police officers nearby, police said.

One of the two officers was shot in the neck and was in a serious, but not life-threatening condition, while the other officer was shot in the leg and less seriously hurt.

Algeria president shows no permanent damage from minor stroke: APS

By Lamine Chikhi and Hamid Ould Ahmed

ALGIERS (Reuters) - Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika was transferred to France for medical tests on Saturday night after suffering a minor stroke that Algeria's official news agency said had caused no permanent damage.

Bouteflika, who has ruled over the North African oil and gas producer for more than a decade, had a "transient ischemic attack" or mini-stroke on Saturday.

The APS news agency quoted his doctor Rachid Bougherbal as saying the attack was brief and its impact would not be permanent: "His state of health is progressing well and has suffered no irreversible damage."

The 76-year-old is part of an older generation of leaders who have dominated politics in a former French colony that supplies a fifth of Europe's natural gas imports and cooperates with the West in combating Islamist militancy.

He has rarely appeared in public in recent months, prompting speculation about his health.

The president was moved to Paris Val-de-Grace military hospital France on the recommendation of his doctors. France's Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius declined to comment but wished Bouteflika, "a friend of France", to get well soon.

Bouteflika is part of an elite that has controlled Algeria since it won independence in a 1954-62 war.

In the early 1990s, the military-backed politicians overturned an election which Islamists were poised to win and then fought a conflict with them in which about 200,000 people were killed.

They also saw off the challenge of Arab Spring protests two years ago, with Bouteflika's government defusing unrest through pay rises and free loans for young people.

Bouteflika has served three terms as president of the OPEC member and is thought unlikely to seek a fourth at an election due in 2014.

U.S. diplomatic cables leaked in 2011 said Bouteflika had been suffering from cancer but it was in remission.

More than 70 percent of Algerians are under 30. About 21 percent of young people are unemployed, the International Monetary Fund says, and many are impatient with the older generation ruling a country where jobs, wages and housing are urgent concerns.

A transient ischemic attack is a temporary blockage in a blood vessel to the brain. It typically lasts for less than five minutes and "usually causes no permanent injury to the brain", the American Stroke Association said on its website.

Such incidents are seen as a health warning, as a third of people who experience them go on to have a full stroke within a year, the organization added.

Fall Out Boy outsells Kid Cudi for top spot on Billboard chart

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - U.S. rock band Fall Out Boy topped the Billboard 200 weekly best-selling album chart for the second time in their five-album career, besting rapper Kid Cudi.

"Save Rock and Roll" sold 154,000 copies in its debut week, according figures on Wednesday from Nielsen SoundScan, outpacing Kid Cudi's "Indicud," which sold 136,000 copies in its first week.

Industry forecasters pegged both albums to sell about 150,000 copes last week, according to trade publication Billboard.com.

Rock band Paramore, whose fourth album "Paramore" was last week's No. 1, fell to No. 12.

Pop singer Justin Timberlake's "The 20/20 Experience" and country singer Blake Shelton's "Based on a True Story" held at the third and fourth spots respectively on the chart for the second consecutive week.

Indie rock trio Yeah Yeah Yeahs' fourth album "Mosquito" debuted at No. 5 on the chart.

Pop singer Pink's "Just Give Me a Reason" topped the digital songs chart for another week with 262,000 downloads, a 7 percent decline from last week, while hip hop duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' "Can't Hold Us" was No. 2 again with 245,000 downloads, a 17 percent rise.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' "Thrift Shop" placed fourth, behind Rihanna's "Stay" and ahead of Justin Timberlake's "Mirrors" on the digital chart.

French DJ duo Daft Punk's new song "Get Lucky," which features singer-producer Pharrell Williams, sold 113,000 downloads last week on only three days of sales. It is the duo's first single in three years.

Year-to-date albums sales stand at 90.5 million, a 5 percent decrease from the same period last year, while 2013 digital song sales of 434 million have declined 2 percent compared to last year.

Sprint delays Galaxy S 4 in-store launch due to inventory issues, online and phone sales aren't affected (update: Samsung responds)

Sprint delays Galaxy S 4 in-store launch due to inventory issues, online and phone sales aren't affected

After T-Mobile said yesterday that it won't be able to offer Samsung's Galaxy S 4 through its online store quite as soon as it expected, Sprint has today announced a similar delay. The carrier originally planned to have Sammy's latest flagship available through all retail channels this Saturday (April 27th), but "unexpected inventory challenges from Samsung" have meant that although online and phone-based sales will open on that date as planned, you won't be able to wander into a Sprint store and pick one up until those supply issues are solved. When that'll be is anyone's guess, but we imagine Sprint will get them into consumers' hands as soon as possible in the hope of improving its balance sheet. See Sprint's full statement after the break.

Update: Samsung has also responded with an official statement, citing "overwhelming global demand" leading to inventory shortages. We've added the comment underneath Sprint's.

Humans feel empathy for robots: fMRI scans show similar brain function when robots are treated the same as humans

Apr. 23, 2013 ? From the T-101 to Data from Star Trek, humans have been presented with the fictional dilemma of how we empathize with robots. Robots now infiltrate our lives, toys like Furbies or robot vacuum cleaners bring us closer, but how do we really feel about these non-sentient objects on a human level? A recent study by researchers at the University of Duisburg Essen in Germany found that humans have similar brain function when shown images of affection and violence being inflicted on robots and humans.

Astrid Rosenthal-von der P?tten, Nicole Kr?mer, and Matthias Brand of the University of Duisburg Essen, will present their findings at the 63rd Annual International Communication Association conference in London. Rosenthal-von der P?tten, Kr?mer and Brand conducted two studies. In the first study, 40 participants watched videos of a small dinosaur-shaped robot that was treated in an affectionate or a violent way and measured their level of physiological arousal and asked for their emotional state directly after the videos. Participants reported to feel more negative watching the robot being abused and showed higher arousal during the negative video.

The second study conducted in collaboration with the Erwin L. Hahn Institute for Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Essen, used functional magnetic-resonance imaging (fMRI), to investigate potential brain correlations of human-robot interaction in contrast to human-human interaction. The 14 participants were presented videos showing a human, a robot and an inanimate object, again being treated in either an affectionate or in a violent way. Affectionate interaction towards both, the robot and the human, resulted in similar neural activation patterns in classic limbic structures, indicating that they elicit similar emotional reactions. However, when comparing only the videos showing abusive behavior differences in neural activity suggested that participants show more negative empathetic concern for the human in the abuse condition.

A great deal of research in the field of human-robot interaction concentrates on the implementation of emotion models in robotic systems. These studies test implementations with regard to their believability and naturalness, their positive influence on participants, or enjoyment of the interaction. But there is little known on how people perceive "robotic" emotion and whether they react emotionally towards robots. People often have problems verbalizing their emotional state or find it strange to report on their emotions in human-robot interactions. Rosenthal-von der P?tten and Kr?mer's study utilized more objective measures linked to emotion like physiological arousal and brain activity associated with emotional processing.

"One goal of current robotics research is to develop robotic companions that establish a long-term relationship with a human user, because robot companions can be useful and beneficial tools. They could assist elderly people in daily tasks and enable them to live longer autonomously in their homes, help disabled people in their environments, or keep patients engaged during the rehabilitation process," said Rosenthal-von der P?tten. "A common problem is that a new technology is exciting at the beginning, but this effect wears off especially when it comes to tasks like boring and repetitive exercise in rehabilitation. The development and implementation of uniquely humanlike abilities in robots like theory of mind, emotion and empathy is considered to have the potential to solve this dilemma."

"Investigation on Empathy Towards Humans and Robots Using Psychophysiological Measures and fMRI," by Astrid Rosenthal-von der P?tten and Nicole Kr?mer; To be presented at the 63rd Annual International Communication Association Conference, London, England 17-21 June.

A 1-year randomized clinical trial

New research published as an abstract in The FASEB Journal and presented at Experimental Biology 2013 (EB 2013) on Monday, April 22 ties mushrooms to positive health outcomes in the area of weight management. A one-year, randomized clinical trial conducted by researchers at the Weight Management Center at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and funded by the Mushroom Council found that substituting white button mushrooms for red meat can be a useful strategy for enhancing and maintaining weight loss.1

Participants included obese adults (73 adults; 88% women; mean age 48.4 years) who were placed in an intervention group eating approximately one cup of mushrooms per day in place of meat, and a standard diet control group.

At the end of the one-year trial, researchers found that participants who substituted mushrooms for meat lost seven pounds, showed improvements in body composition compared to participants on the standard diet, and maintained the weight loss. Specifically, those in the intervention group reported lower calorie and fat intake (123 calories, 4.25 grams respectively, per day); lost more pounds and percentage body weight (7 pounds, 3.6 percent of their starting weight); achieved lower body mass index (1.5kg/m2), waist circumference (2.6 inches) and percent total body fat (0.85 percent) compared to participants on the control diet.

The new findings build on previous research, which showed that increasing intake of low-energy-density foods, specifically mushrooms, in place of high-energy-density foods, like lean ground beef, can be an effective method for reducing daily energy and fat intake while still feeling full and satiated after the meal.2

Lawrence Cheskin, M.D., F.A.C.P., Associate Professor, Department of Health, Behavior and Society at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, authored the research study and can discuss the role of mushroom substitution in the area of weight management.

Research will be presented at the Body Composition Poster Session at the meeting of the American Society for Nutrition at Experimental Biology 2013 on Monday, April 22, 1:45 pm-2:45 pm EST; Boston Convention & Exhibition Center, Boston, MA.

'RHOA' star learned about divorce on Twitter

By Drusilla Moorhouse, TODAY contributor

Porsha Stewart was "totally blindsided" by her husband's secret divorce filing, the "Real Housewives of Atlanta" star told Andy Cohen after the reality show's reunion aired.

"When I found out about the divorce, it was absolutely a surprise," she said on Sunday night's "Watch What Happens Live," explaining that she took to Twitter after her sister called to ask whether she'd "heard the news."

"The first thing I see (on Twitter) is 'Kordell divorcing Porsha,'" she revealed. "I thought this is some kind of crazy joke."

Considering her husband hadn't even moved out, her disbelief is understandable.

Even more shocking: The former couple still lives together.? And while their mansion measures approximately 12,000 square feet, Porsha calls their cohabitation a "difficult, difficult situation."

"We're in the same house, but I didn't say we speak," she clarified, adding, "And I didn't say I'm cooking, and it ain't no eggs and bacon and ham hocks no mo'!"

Bahrain stages F1 race amid protests, heavy security

By Alexander Dziadosz

MANAMA (Reuters) - Protesters blocked several roads and police fired teargas at a school in Bahrain on Sunday, activists said, as the Gulf state staged a Formula One race promoted by the government as pure sport but seen by the opposition as a public relations stunt.

Scores of police cars and a couple of armored vehicles stood along the highway from the capital Manama to the race circuit, where the Grand Prix, won by Formula One world champion Sebastian Vettel, took place without incident.

"The number of security in some areas is more than the number of protesters," Sayed Yousif al-Muhafda of the Bahrain Centre for Human Rights Muhafda told Reuters.

Witnesses at the Sakhir desert circuit, roughly 30 km (20 miles) southwest of the capital, said there was no sign of unrest in the immediate vicinity.

Asked for comment on the reported clashes, which included more of the near-nightly violence between police and youths in villages near the capital, an Interior Ministry official said only that everything was normal.

Protests in the Gulf Arab country - a key Western ally that hosts the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet - broke out in 2011, with the Shi'ite-led opposition drawing thousands of demonstrators demanding democratic reforms from the Sunni-led government.

The unrest forced the cancellation of that year's Formula One race and although the event went ahead in 2012, it was overshadowed by violent protests in the country.

Muhafda said several protests and clashes broke out during the day, including in the villages of Sanabis, Al Daih and Jedhafs, where he said police arrested 13 protesters.

Some protesters had blocked several roads around Manama and police fired teargas at a secondary school in the city where students had been demonstrating, he said.

But a heavy security presence - especially in villages near the Sakhir circuit - made it hard for protesters to stage demonstrations for very long, and many of them were dispersed within about 10 minutes, he said.

Except for a black plume of smoke rising from a dirt field, there were few signs of unrest by late afternoon in mostly Shi'ite villages near Manama visited by Reuters.

Police cars patrolled the graffiti-adorned village of Diraz, where clashes have taken place in the last few days.

In Saar village, riot police with teargas guns and white helmets riding in all-terrain vehicles cleared a road that had been blocked with palm tree trunks. A puff of what appeared to be teargas burst down the road. But there was no sign of fighting and the police left quickly after clearing the road.

Nearby streets were blocked with cinderblocks, a rubbish bin and sticks. People stood in doors of shops, swept the streets, rode bicycles and walked dogs nearby.

Bahrain's Crown Prince Salman al-Khalifa, who attended Sunday's race, dismissed the suggestion the government was using the race to paper over human rights abuses. Speaking on Saturday, he said more than 15,000 people visited the circuit on Friday and more were expected on Sunday.

CALM AT THE TRACKS

"What I would like to say is let's focus on what's positive, let's build upon the platform that we have, and let's celebrate this event with Bahrainis who are really passionate," he told reporters at the circuit.

Crown Prince Salman is a driving force behind talks between the government and main opposition groups aimed at breaking the political deadlock. He described the race as an opportunity to transcend national differences.

On Saturday, protests broke out in about 20 villages, activists said, with protesters throwing rocks at police, who responded with tear gas in many cases.

Reuters could not independently verify most of the reports, but witnessed clashes on Saturday and on Friday night in the Sanabis and Budaiya areas west of Manama.

Chief of Public Security Major-General Tariq Al Hassan said on Saturday his forces would deal firmly with any illegal activity, an interior ministry statement said.

The government denies carrying out arbitrary arrests and torture and says any reports of wrongdoing by its security forces are investigated.

At the race track, spectators enjoyed a carnival atmosphere, watching music and dance performances. The opposition has hoped to use the race, watched by millions around the world, to put the spotlight on its pro-democracy campaign.

The government has hoped to show unity and has portrayed the protesters as trying to undermine Bahrain's international image.

"This weekend is really about sport," Crown Prince Salman said.

Stop Waiting on Your Ideas and Get Them Out the Door Now

Getting started is everything. If you need a little help getting a jump start on your great big ideas, consider that the most important thing about your ideas is that they actually have to get off the ground to make any difference.

Update: Initially we posted an infographic that used a grenade metaphor for ideas, with the advice that to make your ideas successful, you have to let go of them and take action on them. This was ill-timed on our part considering the events that are happening in Boston now, and we definitely did not intend to be insensitive.

The overall advice from the graphic still stands and I think could be helpful to many. We've removed it from this page, but you can still see it at the link below.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A follow-up to "Snow White and the Huntsman" is moving forward, though it's still unclear if Kristen Stewart will return as the warrior princess.

Universal Pictures Chairman Adam Fogelson says the studio is aiming for a 2015 release on the sequel to last year's fairy-tale action story.

The movie became overshadowed by headlines surrounding Stewart's affair with her "Snow White" director, Rupert Sanders. The revelation temporarily broke up Stewart's romance with "Twilight" co-star Robert Pattinson, though they later reconciled.

Fogelson said Tuesday at the CinemaCon convention for theater owners in Las Vegas that a sequel is in the works. A studio spokeswoman says no other details are available.

Stewart's spokeswoman did not immediately return phone and email messages Wednesday about whether the actress would be back for the sequel.

Chinas auto industry Metamorphosis-industrial clay | Industrial clay

Energy industry planning pure electric and plug-in hybrid car in 2020, cumulative production and sales of over 5 million. It seems that the world has reached a consensus, to a year, China will become the worlds largest new energy vehicle market. At the same time, Google driverless technology stimulation, linked together by car networking and smart driving techniques ?IT? era of the automobile industry will also accelerate in 2020, the number had only exist the fantasy technologies are expected presented in the car.

Wave of these two technologies bring revolutionary change. Imagine 8 years after Beijings second ring road from time to time there is a no exhaust pipe, passing through the body may have a big letter ?E? electric car is an exciting thing. Of course, the car will be equipped with the most state-of-the-art in-car Internet technology, traffic, navigation, life information, office, entertainment can be done in the car, that alwaysonline. The automotive industry will no longer be just the manufacturing industry, the car is no longer a mere transport.

Consumers, in addition to the cost of car for the first time have the possibility of falling, the vehicle intelligent bring a new industrial chain are also assured the people that their products will make science fiction movies obsolete faster and faster.

From the past 8 mid-Chinas auto industry development speed point of view, 2020 is not far away, and these can look forward to.

500 million carried by New Life

2020 car life is what? At least 4 of the ?Mission Impossible? Tom Cruise driving a BMW i8 concept cars such as the current general flashed the situation on the streets of India can be staged in Beijing, because this car has a plug-in hybrid system, accelerates from zero to 100 km per hour only takes 4.8 seconds, 100 km combined fuel consumption of just 3.76 liters fastest supercar Ming industrial clay in volume production. As the the BMW worlds most important market, this car introduced in China, not later than the other mainstream market.

Of course, when the movie become reality cool new energy luxury car will be more a. Nielsen survey shows that from 2007, Lexus introduced its first hybrid to count past five years, has eight luxurious new energy vehicles introduced into China, they are essentially a hybrid of Ashkenazi and Japanese, cumulative sales more than 20,000 units. Launch plans in accordance with the multinational car dealer, the next five years, there will be 30 variety of luxury cars continue to inject new energy into the Chinese market.

Car dealer enthusiasm from formally introduced in July of this year, China energy-saving and new energy automotive industry goal: ?By 2015, the cumulative pure electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid car production and sales volume to strive to 500,000; 2020 years, pure electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid car production capacity of 2 million, the cumulative production and sales of over 5 million, and the simultaneous development of fuel cell vehicles, vehicles using hydrogen energy industry and international. ?

2015 Chinas new energy vehicles, there can be no breakthrough on the nature of the application and popularization there will still be limited. ?In the international management consulting company Roland Berger, executive director of Greater China, Zhang Junyi opinion, the next few years , Chinas auto industry will continue to catch up with the pace of the global wave of new energy in the development of alternative energy sources, the upgrading of the core technology of electric vehicles, of aerated and charging facilities perfect, and the interests of the business model behind the contest no doubt. 2020 may appear relatively optimistic scenarios of new energy vehicles, pure electric cars will have a certain share in the big cities, the overall penetration of new energy vehicles will increase. ?

Of Chinese consumers, the most ?Willful? feelings will travel clamped major cities purchase policy will be cracked. New energy if not unexpected, since the end of the year, in Shanghai, Beijing and other second-tier cities to buy special regulations have been introduced. The purchase of new energy vehicles will not have Yaohao, free of charge on the card, and the to enjoy dual national and local subsidies.

Have enough models to choose from, the inevitable universal phenomenon: at home with a conventional gasoline models, used to meet the needs of long-distance travel and highway driving; There is a new energy vehicles, used travel to work or weekend short trip. Electric car manufacturers in 2020, China will have 300 million middle-class enough to promote the ?two cars? era.

More economics effect, 5000000 temptation rapid fermentation in the next eight years. ?Then how many years, maybe two barrels of oil does not exist, the grid will be the largest national energy suppliers.? Such economist argumentation unlikely forecast behind, but hidden has invested who captured the huge business opportunities.

But must face up to is that the effect to the promotion of new energy, industrial clay, inevitably not be included in the new energy areas contains a large number of low-speed electric vehicles in 2020, 5,000,000 statistical sources. Therefore, the 2020 is still only on the eve of the new energy industry scale. As the preparation of such a large scale before the onset of the forward-looking technology to improve the efficiency of gasoline in Chinas application of competition within the next few years will heat up.

?2020, start-stop technology will be fully applied in all models.? Currently, this technology is only used in the luxury car body. In 2013, the joint venture partner of BMW put BMW i models will market new carbon fiber manufacturing plant in Moses Lake, Washington, USA, used carbon fiber lightweight materials, at the end of this year, GM Global Advanced Technology Research Center in Shanghai has launched the same aims lightweight magnesium alloys member.

If driving an electric car in 2020, is still a need for financial resources to achieve the lifestyle, automotive interconnect technology with intelligent driving large-scale application of the technology is almost no cost threshold. ?In the future, the cars platform, the IT platform.? Pressure cooker bombs eyed in Boston blast

BOSTON (AP) ? Federal agents zeroed in Tuesday on how the Boston Marathon bombing was carried out ? with kitchen pressure cookers packed with explosives, nails and other lethal shrapnel ? but said they still didn't know who did it and why.

An intelligence bulletin issued to law enforcement and released late Tuesday included a picture of a mangled pressure cooker and a torn black bag the FBI said were part of a bomb.

The FBI and other law enforcement agencies repeatedly pleaded for members of the public to come forward with photos, videos or anything suspicious they might have seen or heard.

"The range of suspects and motives remains wide open," Richard DesLauriers, FBI agent in charge in Boston, said at a news conference. He vowed to "go to the ends of the Earth to identify the subject or subjects who are responsible for this despicable crime."

President Barack Obama branded the attack an act of terrorism but said officials don't know "whether it was planned and executed by a terrorist organization, foreign or domestic, or was the act of a malevolent individual."

Scores of victims remained in hospitals, many with grievous injuries, a day after the twin explosions near the marathon's finish line killed three people, wounded more than 170 and reawakened fears of terrorism. A 9-year-old girl and 10-year-old boy were among 17 victims listed in critical condition.

Heightening jitters in Washington, where security already had been tightened after the bombing, a letter addressed to a senator and poisoned with ricin or a similarly toxic substance was intercepted at a mail facility outside the capital, lawmakers said.

There was no immediate indication the episode was related to the Boston attack. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said the letter was sent to Republican Sen. Roger Wicker, of Mississippi.

Officials found that the bombs in Boston consisted of explosives put in ordinary 1.6-gallon pressure cookers, one with shards of metal and ball bearings, the other with nails, according to a person close to the investigation who spoke on condition of anonymity because the probe was still going on. The bombs were stuffed into black duffel bags and left on the ground, the person said.

DesLauriers confirmed that investigators had found pieces of black nylon from a bag or backpack and fragments of BBs and nails, possibly contained in a pressure cooker. He said the items were sent to the FBI laboratory at Quantico, Va., for analysis.

The FBI said it is looking at what Boston television station WHDH said are photos sent by a viewer that show the scene right before and after the bombs went off. The photo shows something next to a mailbox that appears to be a bag, but it's unclear what the significance is.

"We're taking a look at hundreds of photos, and that's one of them," FBI spokesman Jason Pack said.

Investigators said they haven't determined what was used to set off the explosives.

Pressure cooker explosives have been used in international terrorism and have been recommended for lone-wolf operatives by al-Qaida's branch in Yemen.

But information on how to make the bombs is readily found online, and U.S. officials said Americans should not rush to judgment in linking the attack to overseas terrorists.

DesLauriers said there had been no claim of responsibility for the attack.

He urged people to come forward with anything suspicious, such as hearing someone express an interest in explosives or a desire to attack the marathon, seeing someone carrying a dark heavy bag at the race or hearing mysterious explosions recently.

"Someone knows who did this," the FBI agent said.

The bombs exploded 10 or more seconds apart, tearing off victims' limbs and spattering streets with blood, instantly turning the festive race into a hellish scene of confusion, horror and heroics.

The blasts killed 8-year-old Martin Richard, of Boston and 29-year-old Krystle Campbell, of Medford. The Shenyang Evening News, a state-run Chinese newspaper, identified the third victim as Lu Lingzi. She was a graduate student at Boston University.

Doctors who treated the wounded corroborated reports that the bombs were packed with shrapnel intended to cause mayhem.

"We've removed BBs, and we've removed nails from kids. One of the sickest things for me was just to see nails sticking out of a little girl's body," said Dr. David Mooney, director of the trauma center at Boston Children's Hospital.

At Massachusetts General Hospital, all four amputations performed there were above the knee, with no hope of saving more of the legs, said Dr. George Velmahos, chief of trauma surgery.

"It wasn't a hard decision to make," he said. "We just completed the ugly job that the bomb did."

Obama plans to visit Boston on Thursday to attend an interfaith service in honor of the victims. He has traveled four times to cities reeling from mass violence, most recently in December after the schoolhouse shooting in Newtown, Conn.

In the wake of the attack, security was stepped up around the White House and across the country. Police massed at federal buildings and transit centers in the nation's capital, critical response teams deployed in New York City and security officers with bomb-sniffing dogs spread through Chicago's Union Station.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said that the stepped-up security was a precaution and that there was no evidence the bombings were part of a wider plot.

Pressure cooker explosives have been used in Afghanistan, India, Nepal and Pakistan, according to a July 2010 intelligence report by the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security. One of the three devices used in the May 2010 Times Square attempted bombing was a pressure cooker, the report said.

"Placed carefully, such devices provide little or no indication of an impending attack," the report said.

The Pakistani Taliban, which claimed responsibility for the 2010 attempt in Times Square, has denied any part in the Boston Marathon attack.

Al-Qaida's branch in Yemen gave a detailed description of how to make a bomb using a pressure cooker in a 2010 issue of Inspire, its English-language online publication aimed at would-be terrorists acting alone.

In a chapter titled "Make a bomb in the kitchen of your mom," it says "the pressurized cooker is the most effective method" for making a simple bomb, and it provides directions.

The tightly sealed pot makes easier-to-obtain but weaker explosives faster and stronger, amplifying the blast and the carnage.

Naser Jason Abdo, a former U.S. soldier, was sentenced to life in prison last year after being convicted of planning to use a pair of bombs made from pressure cookers in an attack on a Texas restaurant frequented by soldiers from Fort Hood. He was found with the Inspire article.

Investigators in the Boston bombing also are combing surveillance tapes from businesses around the finish line and asking travelers at Logan Airport to share any photos or video that might help.

"This is probably one of the most photographed areas in the country yesterday," said Boston police Commissioner Edward Davis. He said two security sweeps of the marathon route had been conducted before the bombing.

Boston police and firefighter unions announced a $50,000 reward for information leading to arrests.

Ricin roils Washington: How dangerous? (+video)

Preliminary tests indicate that letters sent to President Obama and to Sen. Roger Wicker (R) of Mississippi were laced with the potentially deadly poison ricin. They were postmarked Memphis, Tenn.

By Peter Grier,?Staff writer / April 17, 2013

A Prince George's County firefighter dressed in a protective suit walks into a government mail screening facility in Hyattsville, Md., Wednesday. Police swept across the US Capitol complex to chase a flurry of reports of suspicious packages and envelopes after preliminary tests indicated poisonous ricin in two letters sent to President Obama and a Mississippi senator.

Ricin was the particular worry of the day. Preliminary tests indicate that letters sent to President Obama and to Sen. Roger Wicker (R) of Mississippi were both laced with the deadly poison. Postal screening facilities outside Washington had intercepted the mail before it reached federal office buildings.

?The investigation into these letters remains ongoing, and more letters may still be received. There is no indication of a connection to the attack in Boston,? said an FBI statement.

Both letters were postmarked in Memphis, Tenn., according to the Associated Press. Both said ?to see a wrong and not expose it, is to become a silent partner to its continuance.? Both were signed ?I am KC and I approve this message?.

Sen. Claire McCaskill (D) of Missouri said the Capitol Police have a particular suspect in mind in this case. It is someone who ?writes a lot of letters to members? she said, according to the Associated Press.

Where ricin is involved, preliminary tests can be inaccurate. Full laboratory tests will be needed to confirm the poison?s presence.

Lawmakers were made even more nervous by reports from some states that district offices were also getting questionable mail. Republican Sens. Jeff Flake of Arizona and John Cornyn of Texas both said that letters set aside as suspicious by staff members back home had been tested by law enforcement and found harmless. Democratic Sen. Carl Levin of Michigan said a letter sent to his Saginaw office was still being checked.

Stocks close higher, buoyed by upbeat jobless claims report?

Stocks ended higher Thursday lifted by an upbeat jobless claims report, with the Dow and S&P 500 closing at fresh levels, while weakness in large tech companies limited gains on the Nasdaq.

"The market seems to be on autopilot," said Joe Saluzzi, co-manager of trading at Themis Trading. "Everyone believes there are some serious issues being overlooked, but no one wants to fight a momentum-fueled rally?Plus, we've been on very light volume; when you see rallies, you want to see buyers."

(Read More: 'Amazed' Cramer Tells Why This Rally Is 'Very Unusual')

The Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced for the fourth-consecutive session, lifted by Pfizer and Verizon. Hewlett-Packard dropped more than 6 percent.

The S&P 500 also finished higher, while the Nasdaq finished largely unchanged after soaring nearly 2 percent in the previous session. Still, the S&P and Nasdaq are on pace for their second best weekly gains for the year.

The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, ended above 12.

Most key S&P sectors closed in positive territory, led by consumer discretionary and telecoms, while techs remained lower.

Shares of major tech companies including Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard and Intelslumped sharply after market research firm IDC said worldwide shipments of personal computers tumbled 13.9 percent in the first quarter, the biggest drop since the firm began issuing quarterly numbers in 1994. At least three brokerages downgraded Microsoft.

(Read More:Suckers! Tech Execs Selling Stock at Record Pace)

"Forget [S&P] 1,660, 1,700, etc. You should be concerned about protecting big gains," wrote Elliot Spar, market strategist at Stifel Nicolaus. "With new money, be selective and patient. ... This is not the first quarter anymore. You'll have to work harder to get on base and then stay close to the bag."

Retailers were among the day's strongest performers. L Brands (formerly Limited Brands) and Ross Stores rallied to lead the S&P 500 gainers after both firms posted higher-than-expected same-store sales in March. Meanwhile, top retailers Costco and TJX reported weaker-than-expected sales, but still traded higher along with the broader market.

JC Penney jumped after three more top executives at the retailer parted ways with the company, according to a New York Post report, following the ouster of Chief Executive Ron Johnson.

Herbalife jumped after the SEC charged former KPMG partner Scott London and his friend Bryan Shaw for insider trading. In recorded conversations, London told Shaw details about earnings announcements for Herbalife and another KPMG client, Deckers. In one call, London referenced rumors that had been spread about Herbalife going private.

Among earnings, Rite Aid surged after the pharmacy chain posted its second consecutive quarterly profit as the company filled more prescriptions and sold more generic drugs.

Pier 1 Imports slid after the furniture retailer posted earnings that were mostly in line with expectations, but handed in a weaker-than-expected outlook.

Banking giants JP Morgan and Wells Fargo are slated to post earnings on Friday. (Vote Now: Will JP Morgan Meet, Beat, Miss?)

On the economic front, weekly jobless claims declined 42,000 to a seasonally adjusted 346,000, according to the Labor Department, after a huge jump in the prior week. Economists polled by Reuters had expected a reading of 365,000.

Import prices fell in March as weak petroleum costs offset a spike in food prices, according to the Labor Department, matching expectations. The tame inflation environment should allow the Federal Reserve to stay on its ultra-easy monetary policy course as it tries to nurse the economy back to health.

On Wednesday, minutes from the Fed's March meeting released suggested some policymakers expect to slow the pace of asset purchases by mid-year and end them later this year. Under its current quantitative easing program, the Fed purchases $85 billion in Treasurys and mortgage-backed securities each month.

Still, the market rally continued despite concerns about when the central bank might start to pull back its stimulus efforts amid the healing U.S. economy.

Treasury prices eased off their highs after the government sold $13 billion in 30-year bonds at a high yield of 2.998 percent. The bid-to-cover ratio, an indicator of demand, was 2.49.

Computer composition pioneer David Cope discusses his iPad app (video)

Image

We probably shouldn't have been surprised when David Cope excitedly asked us if we'd like to see his new iPad app, as we began packing up our shoot for a forthcoming Engadget Show episode. After all, the former UC Santa Cruz music professor's name has, over the past several decades, become closely tied to the world of computer-generated music -- it figures that the journey that began with punch cards would have eventually led to tablets and smartphones.

Jambandit hit the App Store a couple of weeks ago. It's the first offering from Recombinant Inc., a small company co-founded by Cope in Santa Cruz a few years back as a "commercial extension of a body of [his] academic work." His time in the field began during one particularly bad bout with writer's block -- tasked with writing an opera, Cope eschewed traditional paths with the earnest development of a new system for creating music, working to create a software program that could generate scores in the styles of different composer -- a move that, unsurprisingly, opened up a slew of questions on the subject of creativity.
