Qualcomm's MSM8960 Snapdragon S4 benchmarks pop up online

Qualcomm's MSM8960 Snapdragon S4 benchmarks pop up online
We put Qualcomm's S4 development platform through its paces (twice, no less) at CES, but shorn of the glitz of Las Vegas, does it have the oomph to wow us? Someone at the company loosed Nenamark 2 on the slate, producing a score of 54.90. Given the fact that its producing graphics for a 1024 x 600 screen, we're excited to see it comfortably edge the Galaxy S II Skyrocket (54.1) and Galaxy Note (32.8) -- with our mouths watering at the thought of what this 28nm CPU can do in a smartphone. We've included the benchmark in full after the break, if you're ready for such exciting revelations.

There are a lot of jobs out there that accept those who graduate in programs related to communications, which is why when searching for financial assistance, you may be able to find a lot out there. If you are on a tight budget, know all about the financial aids that are available for people who want to take a communications degree. Financial aids that are offered in communication courses are due to the fact that there are a lot of occupations to choose from once they have graduated. The advantages of having a communications degree are plenty. Having a diploma in communications will help you land in areas related to arts and design such as journalism, photography, graphic designs and a lot more. With this degree you can have almost any career, which is why grants that are offered for communications diploma are all over the place. Regarding scholarships, how do you get them? A grant in communications degree is just like grants in other educational courses. To get financial assistance, may need you to apply for it. Just know that there are other colleges that dont do the usual way of applying. You might be asked to demonstrate your communicating abilities in the application process because this is a unique kind of field. As with English majors, being granted the scholarship might need you to state your opinions. You may be requested to present your speaking ability or to write essays. You will have to write an essay persuading them in order for you to have the financial assistance. In here, we may have the idea of who is deserving and who does not really belong. If your heart resides in the field of communication, then in this application you must do everything in order for you to be granted that scholarship. Once you have chosen to go after a communications diploma, you should asses yourself with all the speaking skills that you have in order for your application to be the genuinely representative of you. We can say that there are a number of schools that offer grants. You should visit the communications program website of the universities you are interested in. Sometimes private scholarships are offered, which is really a great financial help to those pupils who are majoring in other courses. With the Electric Document System Foundation or EDSF, financial assistance is given to those communications students. They offer 30 scholarships every year to students (fulltime) with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. The Betty Endicott/NTA-NCCB Student Scholarship and the James Lawrence Fly Scholarship are both grants that can be of service to students with communication degrees. Every university has its own communications department and through it they may offer a communications student some financial assistance. At this time, there are schools that give financial help to their students. Famous institutes that provide this are the University of Texas at San Antonio and the University of Miami. Not everyone who decides to pursue some part of the communications field gets a communications degree. In some cases, they go to other related degrees. With this aspect, you may be able to find a lot of financial assistance options that are for those with communications degree.

Penguins: Crosby dealing with neck injury (AP)

PITTSBURGH ? Sidney Crosby isn't just dealing with the lingering effects of a concussion. A California doctor says the Pittsburgh Penguins' star also is recovering from a neck injury.

Crosby visited with neurological spine specialist Dr. Robert S. Bray in Los Angeles this week as he continues treatment for symptoms that resurfaced during a loss to Boston on Dec. 5.

While Crosby initially said he didn't sustain a concussion against the Bruins, the team says Bray diagnosed Crosby with one and also discovered an unspecified neck injury, though Bray told the team the neck injury is "fully healed."

Crosby missed more than 10 months after sustaining head shots in consecutive games in early January 2011. He returned on Nov. 21 and had 12 points in eight games before the symptoms resurfaced following a physical game against the Bruins.

The team said Bray's findings will be evaluated by independent specialists.

General manager Ray Shero said at the All-Star game in Ottawa that Crosby had returned from California and that he was "optimistic" Crosby will play again this season.

"He's back in Pittsburgh now, hopefully we'll see next week where he is and we'll get the reports from California and compare notes to what's been done so far," Shero said.

The Canadian web site sportsnet.ca, citing unidentified sources, reported Crosby visited with a doctor in Utah, where an MRI revealed an abnormality in two vertebrae in Crosby's neck.

Crosby's agent, Pat Brisson, did not immediately return a request for comment from The Associated Press.

The 24-year-old Crosby acknowledged earlier this month he was still experiencing headaches and motion problems. He traveled to Atlanta recently to visit with Dr. Ted Carrick, a chiropractic neurologist who successfully treated Crosby last summer.

Crosby has been cleared for light exercise and skated with his teammates during a road trip through Florida two weeks ago.

The Penguins entered the All-Star break on a seven-game winning streak. Pittsburgh returns to practice Monday and will host Toronto on Tuesday night.

The team has stressed Crosby will not play until he is ready.

"The thing with Sidney is we want to continue to look to see how we can get this under control and manageable so he can return to play," Shero said. "As I said before he's not (playing) until those symptoms resolve but hopefully have him back at some point here soon."

French 2011 deficit to be under 5.4 percent GDP: Sarkozy (Reuters)

PARIS (Reuters) ? France's public deficit could come in at 5.4 percent, or even 5.3 percent of gross domestic product for 2011, well below the government's initial forecast, President Nicolas Sarkozy said on Sunday.

The French government said earlier this month the 2011 deficit could be less than 5.5 percent of GDP, below an official target of 5.7 percent.

US team due in NKorea in March (AP)

WASHINGTON ? U.S. military personnel will travel to North Korea in March to restart efforts to recover thousands of servicemen missing from the 1950-53 Korean War, the Defense Department said Thursday.

The U.S. and North Korean militaries agreed last October to restart recovery operations in what was seen a sign of easing tensions between the wartime enemies, but they did not announce a date.

A letter from Republican Sen. Richard Lugar to Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, however, notes that the agreement sets a March 1 start date. His Jan. 17 letter was obtained by The Associated Press.

Maj. Carie Parker, a spokeswoman for the Defense Department's POW/Missing Personnel Office, confirmed by email Thursday the North's military will begin preparations March 1 for the arrival later that month of a small U.S. advance team that will evaluate conditions and prepare for operations.

The Dec. 17 death of North Korea's longtime ruler Kim Jong Il, and the succession of his untested younger son, Kim Jong Un, has led to a pause in U.S.-North Korean talks on its nuclear program and a possible resumption of U.S. food aid.

The Defense Department has described the recovery of war remains as a "stand-alone humanitarian matter not tied to any other issue between the two countries."

The Pentagon estimates 5,500 U.S. servicemen are unaccounted for on North Korean soil. The administration of President George W. Bush suspended recovery operations in 2005 amid rising tensions with North Korea. The Americans said they were worried about the safety of U.S. recovery teams in the country.

Joint recovery missions began in 1996 and are the only form of U.S.-North Korean military cooperation. The two countries do not have diplomatic relations. The Korean War ended with an armistice rather than a peace treaty, so the conflict never formally ended. Some 28,000 American troops remain based in South Korea.

U.S. veterans organizations have long advocated an aggressive U.S. effort to recover remains from the war. Many U.S. war dead were left behind when Chinese forces overran U.S. positions in North Korea in late 1950. Most veterans are now in their 80s, and the chances of any survivors inside North Korea appear slim.

Lugar, the top Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, says that North Korean officials have an extensive set of information and records related to the war and Americans who served.

"Press for the full story about those American service personnel and for the release of any who may remain alive," he wrote to Panetta.

The Defense Department periodically confirms the identity of missing U.S. service members based on documents and remains previously supplied by North Korea.

Justin Bieber Makes 'Huge Impact' On Organ Donor Registrations

Registration at Ontario bank surges after singer tweets about one fan's need for a lung transplant.

<P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> is a charitable guy. So when a fan of his reached out to him on Twitter to help spread the word about organ and blood donation, one particular bank quickly saw more and more people in the giving spirit. Belieber Helene Campbell, 20, tweeted the teen star last week about her own struggles (including how she herself needs a lung transplant). Bieber then began tweeting to her and about her, shedding more light on the cause than the fan could have ever anticipated. In the days since the online correspondence, the Ontario-based Trillium Gift of Life Network has seen donations skyrocket to more than 1,200 people, four times the amount the network usually receives. In part it had a lot to do with Bieber, but also the campaign started by Campbell, who suffers from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. "Helene has done an incredible job inspiring and motivating Ontarians to register their consent to organ and tissue donation. On an average day we would expect about 50 new online registrations," President and CEO Ronnie Gavsie said in a statement on Wednesday (January 25). "Since Helene's campaign began last Thursday, the average has been closer to 200 per day! There are over 1,500 people in Ontario waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant, on behalf of all them and Trillium Gift of Life Network, thank you Helene and thank you Justin Bieber!" Shortly after his initial tweet, she shared with him, "@justinbieber you have made a huge impact, not only on my life, but for many others in need of the gift of life now and in the future!" His response: "@alungstory glad to be able to help. best part of what i do." Bieber's other charity work includes his <a href="/news/articles/1673555/justin-bieber-believe-charity-drive.jhtml"><i>Believe</i> Charity Drive</a> as well as his participation with the <a href="/news/articles/1674628/justin-bieber-new-york-city.jhtml">Pencils of Promise foundation</a>.</p>

Next Xbox console to be six times more powerful, headed for fall 2013 release?

Xbox 720, Xbox Loop -- whatever Microsoft ends up calling it, that hot rod of a console looks to be on deck for a late fall 2013 release. According to IGN's sources, this successor to the Redmond gaming throne is purported to pack a GPU based on AMD's 6000 series of chips and will boast silicon circuitry that catapults its performance past Nintendo's upcoming Wii U by 20 percent. If you're looking for a more apples to green X's comparison, this next-gen console's graphical capabilities are also reportedly six times greater than its 360 progenitor. While MS is likely holding back its monstrous new platform for a big E3 reveal, it appears the company's still whittling down its spec list, with dev kits to be issued later this August. No mention was made of its rumored Kinect 2 integration, but we're more than certain that famous hacking tech will be front and center.

'Hugo' And 'The Artist' Lead Oscar Race

George Clooney and BFF Brad Pitt to face off in Best Actor category.
By Gil Kaufman

A silent picture, a baseball flick, a horse tale, a 3-D children's movie for grown-ups, an infidelity family drama, an ode to classic cinema and a film that tackles race relations against the backdrop of the 1960s civil right movement. The nominations for Best Picture at this year's Academy Awards read like a travelogue of the history of film.

The names of the nominees for the 84th annual Academy Awards, hosted by Billy Crystal, were announced on Tuesday (January 24) morning and in addition to a lot of the expected vote-getters, a few dark horses emerged from the pack, which was led by Martin Scorsese's "Hugo" with 11 nods, followed by the acclaimed silent film "The Artist" with 10.

For photos of all the Oscar nominees, click here.

The Best Picture
race will be a dogfight between one of the year's most lauded films, the French silent movie "The Artist"; director Alexander Payne's family drama "The Descendants"; the inspiring tale of "The Help"; Scorsese's 3-D children's film/ode to his love of the movies, "Hugo"; and one of Woody Allen's most box-office-friendly flicks in years, "Midnight in Paris." Also making the list was the Brad Pitt baseball drama "Moneyball," as well as Steven Spielberg's "War Horse," reclusive director Terrence Malick's existential "The Tree of Life" and "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close."

The bids for "The Artist" mark the first time in nearly 80 years that a black-and-white silent film is the leading contender to take the Best Picture award. The Oscars will air live on February 26 from the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles.

Golden Globe winner George Clooney and his pal Pitt will vie for the Best Actor award for their work, respectively, in "The Descendants" and "Moneyball." They will need to overcome a strong bid from Jean Dujardin in "The Artist," as well as Gary Oldman in the drama "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy." Also in the mix is the surprise vote for Mexican actor Demian Bichir, who was praised for his work in "A Better Life" as a gardener in East L.A. intent on keeping his son out of a local gang.

It's a mix of the usual suspects and some new names in the Best Actress
category, with 16-time nominee Meryl Streep leading the list for her take on Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron lady," Viola Davis earning major kudos for her work as a sweet-natured maid in "The Help," Michelle Williams getting a nod for her portrayal of Marilyn Monroe in "My Week With Marilyn" and first-time nominee Rooney Mara for her goth punk blitzkrieg in "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo." Glenn Close was also honored for her gender-bending turn in "Albert Nobbs."

Best Director will pit three legends — Scorsese, Allen and Malick — against Payne and rising star Michel Hazanavicius for "The Artist."

The Best Supporting Actor category features Kenneth Branagh ("My Week with Marilyn"), Johan Hill ("Moneyball"), Nick Nolte ("Warrior"), Christopher Plummer ("Beginners") and Max Von Sydow ("Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close"). In the Best Supporting Actress race, Octavia Spencer ("The Help") will take on "Janet McTeer ("Albert Nobbs"), Melissa McCarthy ("Bridesmaids"), Jessica Chastain ("The Help") and Berenice Bejo ("The Artist").

Breakout "Saturday Night Live" star Kristen Wiig and her writing partner Annie Mumolo were honored with a Best Original Screenplay bid for their explosively funny "Bridesmaids" script, along with Allen for "Midnight in Paris," Hazanavicius for "The Artist," Asghar Farhadi for "A Separation" and J.C. Chandor for "Margin Call."

The Animated Feature battle will feature such popcorn pleasers as "Kung Fu Panda 2" going up against "Puss in Boots" and "Rango" as well as two lesser-known movies, "A Cat in Paris" and "Chico & Rita."

Can Low Birth Weight Raise Autism Risk? (HealthDay)

TUESDAY, Jan. 24 (HealthDay News) -- After studying data on more than 3,700 pairs of identical twins, researchers from Northwestern University found that low birth weight was associated with more than triple the risk for autism spectrum disorder among twins in which autism only affected one of the children.

"That only one twin is affected by ASD [autism spectrum disorder] in some identical twin pairs suggests that environmental factors may play a role either independently or in interaction with autism risk genes," study author Molly Losh, director of Northwestern's Neurodevelopmental Disabilities Laboratory, said in a university news release.

"Our study of discordant twins -- twin pairs in which only one twin was affected by ASD -- found birth weight to be a very strong predictor of autism spectrum disorder," she added.

The study, which was released online in advance of publication in an upcoming print issue of the journal Psychological Medicine, used data from the Swedish Twin Registry's Child and Adolescent Twin Study.

In analyzing twins in which one baby was more than 14 ounces, or at least 15 percent heavier at birth than the other, the researchers found the risk for autism rose 13 percent for every 3.5 ounce drop in birth weight.

The study results suggested that birth weight could play a role in the complex causes of autism by interacting with a child's underlying genetic predisposition, or likelihood, of developing the condition, the researchers said.

Losh added that because autism is a developmental disorder involving early brain development, prenatal and perinatal environmental factors, such as birth weight, may be especially important.

The researchers noted, however, their findings may not apply to children who are not part of a multiple-birth pregnancy.

While the study found an association between birth weight and autism risk, it did not prove a cause-and-effect relationship.

Google to merge user data across more services (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Google announced a plan Tuesday to link user data across its email, video, social-networking and other services that it says will create a "beautifully simple and intuitive" user experience. But critics raised privacy concerns like those that helped kill the search giant's Buzz social networking service.

The changes, which take effect March 1, will remove some of the legal hurdles Google Inc. faces in trying to link information across services from Gmail to YouTube to the Google Plus social network that replaced Buzz.

More than 70 different company policies are being streamlined into one main privacy policy and about a dozen others. Separate policies will continue to govern products including Google's Chrome Web browser and its Wallet service for electronic payments.

The company said the new system will give users more relevant search results and information, while helping advertisers find customers ? especially on mobile devices.

For example, if you spend an hour on Google searching the Web for skateboards, the next time you log into YouTube, you might get recommendations for videos featuring Tony Hawk, along with ads for his merchandise and the nearest place to buy them.

"If you're signed into Google, we can do things like suggest search queries ? or tailor your search results ? based on the interests you've expressed in Google (Plus), Gmail and YouTube," the company says on a new overview page for its privacy policies. "We'll better understand (what) you're searching for and get you those results faster."

The changes follow the shutdown of Buzz last month. After its introduction less than two years ago, the social networking tool was ridiculed for exposing users' most-emailed contacts to other participants by default, inadvertently revealing some users' ongoing contact with ex-spouses and competitors.

Google has since made Plus the focal point of its challenge to Facebook's social network. In the first seven months since its debut, Plus has attracted more than 90 million users, according to Google. To promote Plus, Google recently began including recommendations about people and companies with Plus accounts in its search results. That change has provoked an outcry from critics who say Google is abusing its dominance in Internet search to drive more traffic to its own services.

Google and the Federal Trade Commission reached a settlement last year that forbids Google from misrepresenting how it uses personal information and from sharing an individual's data without prior approval. Google also agreed to biennial privacy audits for the next two decades.

Google said it talked to regulators about the upcoming privacy changes, which it will apply worldwide. An FTC spokeswoman declined to comment on the changes or say whether the agency was consulted.

Some critics saw Google as trying to beat regulators to the punch by setting a precedent before the FTC unveils its own framework for protecting online privacy.

Jeff Chester, executive director of the privacy group Center for Digital Democracy, said Google hopes "that by creating a one-stop shop for privacy policy it will deflect regulatory action."

Google, Facebook and other popular Internet services all want to learn as much as possible about their users so they can sell more advertising at higher rates to marketers looking to target people interested in specific products, such as golf clubs or skinny jeans.

Google says users who opt to see personalized ads are 37 percent more likely to respond to an ad than people who opt out of targeting.

The changes follow a rare letdown in revenue growth at Google's lucrative advertising network. Google's fourth-quarter earnings report last week showed the company's average revenue per click fell 8 percent from the previous year, despite robust growth in online shopping at the holidays.

Google shares, which have fallen 9 percent since the report, closed Tuesday at $580.93, down $4.59 for the day.

Ryan Calo, director for privacy at the Stanford Center for Internet and Society, said Google is trying to make its policy privacy transparent instead of bogging users down with pages of legalese; the new privacy policies run about 10,000 words, down from 68,000.

But he said the company must ensure that the ways it uses data help users without revealing sensitive information.

"If it creeps people out, then they need to be aware of that," he said.

Rep. Giffords to resign from Congress this week (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona announced Sunday she intends to resign from Congress this week to concentrate on recovering from wounds suffered in an assassination attempt a little more than a year ago that shook the country.

"I don't remember much from that horrible day, but I will never forget the trust you placed in me to be your voice," the Democratic lawmaker said on a video posted without prior notice on her Facebook page.

"I'm getting better. Every day my spirit is high," she said. "I have more work to do on my recovery. So to do what's best for Arizona, I will step down this week."

Giffords was shot in the head and grievously wounded last January as she was meeting with constituents outside a supermarket in Tucson, Ariz. Her progress had seemed remarkable, to the point that she was able to walk dramatically into the House chamber last August to cast a vote.

Her shooting prompted an agonizing national debate about super-charged rhetoric in political campaigns, although the man charged in the shooting later turned out to be mentally ill.

In Washington, members of Congress were told to pay more attention to their physical security. Legislation was introduced to ban high-capacity ammunition clips, although it never advanced.

Under state law, Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer must call a special election to fill out the remainder of Giffords' term, which ends at the end of 2012.

President Barack Obama on Sunday called Giffords "the very best of what public service should be."

"Gabby's cheerful presence will be missed in Washington," Obama said. "But she will remain an inspiration to all whose lives she touched ? myself included. And I'm confident that we haven't seen the last of this extraordinary American."

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said he saluted Giffords "for her service and for the courage and perseverance she has shown in the face of tragedy. She will be missed."

In a statement, House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California said that "since the tragic events one year ago, Gabby has been an inspiring symbol of determination and courage to millions of Americans."

Democratic officials had held out hope for months that the congresswoman might recover sufficiently to run for re-election or even become a candidate to replace retiring Republican Sen. Jon Kyl.

The shooting on Jan. 8, 2011, left six people dead, a federal judge and a Giffords aide among them. Twelve others were wounded.

A 23-year-old man, Jared Lee Loughner, has pleaded not guilty to 49 charges in the shooting. He has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and is being forcibly medicated at a Missouri prison facility in an effort by authorities to make him mentally ready for trial.

In the months since she was shot, Giffords, 41, has been treated in Houston as well as Arizona as she re-learned how to walk and speak.

She made a dramatic appearance on the House floor Aug. 2, when she unexpectedly walked in to vote for an increase in the debt limit. Lawmakers from both parties cheered her presence, and she was enveloped in hugs.

More recently, she participated in an observance of the anniversary of the shooting in Arizona.

In "Gabby: A Story of Courage and Hope," a book released last year that she wrote with her husband, the astronaut Mark Kelly, she spoke of how much she wanted to get better, regain what she lost and return to Congress.

She delivers the last chapter in her own voice, saying in a single page of short sentences and phrases that everything she does reminds her of that horrible day and that she was grateful to survive.

"I will get stronger. I will return," she wrote.

Giffords was shot in the left side of the brain, the part that controls speech and communication.

Kelly commanded the space shuttle Endeavour on its last mission in May. She watched the launch from Cape Canaveral, Fla.

Kelly, who became a NASA astronaut in 1996 and made four trips into space aboard the space shuttle, retired in October.

Vodafone not liable for $4.4B India tax bill (AP)

MUMBAI, India ? British telecom giant Vodafone is not liable for up to $4.4 billion in back taxes and penalties, India's top court said Friday, in a ruling that removes significant uncertainty for foreign companies investing in the country.

The decision will come as a relief to international investors who feared the Vodafone precedent would expose them to unforeseen tax liabilities.

"The Supreme Court has come with a thumping judgment," Vodafone lawyer Harish Salve told reporters.

Faced with flagging growth and investment and a weakening currency, the Indian government has been scrambling to rekindle foreign investment.

Analysts say the Vodafone tax case had cast a chill on investor sentiment, serving as a powerful emblem of the danger of shifting regulations in Asia's third largest economy.

At the same time, the Indian government is eager to boost revenues to help balance its budget and pay for planned increases in spending on social programs in a country where some 800 million live on less than $2 a day.

Analysts say at least eight other companies are facing similar litigation, as India steps up tax collection efforts to help plug its growing fiscal deficit.

"This will improve investor sentiment tremendously," said Mumbai lawyer Nishith Desai. "Rule of law is re-established."

He said the verdict will hasten dealmaking which had stalled as companies awaited clarity on tax law.

"We will see a lot of interest in India in terms of FDI (foreign direct investment) and outbound investment as well," said Desai, who has done work for Vodafone.

The dispute centered on Vodafone's $11 billion acquisition of the Indian telecom assets of Hong Kong's Hutchison Telecommunications in 2007.

In May 2007, Vodafone International Holdings BV ? a Dutch subsidiary of the British telecom giant ? acquired a 67 percent stake in CGP Investments Ltd., a Cayman Islands company which held the Indian telecom assets of Hutchison.

Vodafone says it doesn't owe tax on the deal because it took place between two foreign entities.

Friday's ruling overturns a high court decision which favored Indian tax authorities. Mumbai's high court had found that the deal was taxable in India because it involved the indirect transfer of Indian assets, which accrue revenue in India.

The government said Vodafone owed 112.2 billion rupees ($2.2 billion) in tax and interest, plus up to 100 percent in penalties.

Vodafone said the Supreme Court's decision absolved it of liability.

Vodafone said the court would also refund, with 4 percent interest, the 25 billion rupee ($496 million) deposit it made on the potential tax bill in November 2010.

"We will continue to invest in the India business, particularly in rolling out 3G services to rural India," said spokesman Simon Gordon from London.

GE, SAB Miller, Cadbury, AT&T, Sanofi, and Vedanta are among the companies fighting tax cases in India that could be affected by the Vodafone precedent, said Sandeep Ladda, executive director at PricewaterhouseCoopers in India.

"This settles a prolonged litigation which had created a lot of uncertainty for multinationals," he said. "This should provide much needed respite to other litigants in other cases."

But he cautioned that the legal precedent may have limited impact on new deals. India's new Direct Tax Code, likely to be implemented in 2013, currently contains provisions that would make transactions similar to the Vodafone deal liable to Indian tax, he said.

Desai said he hoped the new tax code would be changed to reflect Friday's judgment.

India is an increasingly important market for Vodafone. It was home to 145 million of Vodafone Group Plc's 391 million mobile customers worldwide as of September.

Vodafone lost 9 million pounds in India during the six months ending in September, but counted on the country for 9 percent of the group's 23.5 billion pound global revenues during the period.

Sex Is Safe for Many with Heart Disease, Report Says

Sex might seem like a risky occupation for the more than 27 million Americans who have been diagnosed with heart disease. But that?s not necessarily so, says a new report. The risk varies greatly depending on the severity of a person?s condition?as well as how stressful (or, perhaps, exciting) the sex is.

Cardiac patients whose condition is considered stable have a low risk of inducing further heart problems by having sex, according to the report, published online Thursday in Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association. Of all people who die suddenly, only about 0.6 percent did so while engaging in sexual activity, according to previous research. If that still sounds a little risky, consider that three quarters of those people were sleeping with someone other than their spouse?most with a younger partner, at a location other than home, or were trying to perform ?after excessive food and alcohol consumption,? says report authors, led by Glen Levine, of the Baylor College of Medicine.

The researchers suggest that relatively healthy heart disease sufferers might do well to stress less about sex?and checking with their doctor is a good first step toward ensuring that it?s a safe endeavor. ?Changes in sexual activity after a cardiac event may impair the patient?s quality of life, negatively affect psychological health, and strain marital or other important intimate relationships, which in turn may lead to depression and anxiety,? according to the report. Research published last year found that sexual satisfaction might actually help protect against heart disease.

The report also concludes that cardiovascular drugs have minimal effect on sexual function, and the authors recommend patients continue to take their meds. They also advise talking these things over with a doctor of counselor. Most patients and their partners feel that ?they have been inadequately educated on this topic by healthcare providers and desire more information on how to resume their normal sexual activity,? the authors noted.

Small community on the Outer Banks deals with proposed toll increase

Getting on the ferry from Ocracoke Island to Cedar Island is now $15, but not for long.

Tasked by the state legislature to get an extra five million dollars in revenue, North Carolina?s Department of Transportation says tolls are going up, way up.

"They talk about clubbing baby seals is bad. They?re clubbing an island, absolutely,? says a resident.

Proposals call for the price to more than double.

And that's not even round trip!

Getting to Cedar Island could cost a driver 66 dollars to and from.

That has drivers looking to take the long way instead.

"There are people here with money that own houses. But a lot of people live here. We're not rich people. We?re rich in life, just don't have money,? says a commuter.

Daily commuters are not getting much of a break at all.

A yearly pass runs $150 now and by spring, it could more than triple, costing $500.

Now residents wonder what this is going to do for tourism.

"They're not going to come here. People are not going to come here. It?s going to kill Hyde County, Ocracoke, it's going to kill the villages, too. We?ve been through enough with the hurricane this year. We had people who lost about everything they had,? says a resident.

Folks in North Carolina aren't the only ones who could see hefty tolls.

This fall, commuters could start paying a 1.84 to get through the Downtown and Midtown Tunnels.

A Virginia delegate from Norfolk wants to pay for the project by no longer exempting gasoline from sales tax.

A little less than a third of the revenue would go towards Hampton Roads.

Adding the 5% sales tax to gas would raise the price of a gallon about 17 cents.

NASA's twin moon probes renamed by children: 'Ebb'

The probes'?new names were offered by fourth grade students in Bozeman, Mont., who were chosen as the winners of NASA's naming contest.

NASA's twin gravity-mapping moon probes received new names Tuesday (Jan. 17), reflecting their mission to study the changing pull of Earth's natural satellite.

Now to be?called "Ebb" and "Flow,"the tandem Gravity Recovery And Interior Laboratory (or Grail) spacecraft arrived in lunar orbit over the New Year weekend and were previously referred to simply as?"A"?and?"B". Their new names were offered by fourth grade students in Bozeman, Mont., who were chosen as the winners of NASA's naming contest.

"The 28 students of Ms. Nina DiMauro's class at Emily Dickinson Elementary School have really hit the nail on the head," said Maria Zuber, who as principal investigator leads the Grail probes' mission from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. "We were really impressed that the students drew their inspiration by researching Grail and its goal of measuring gravity."

"Ebb and Flow truly capture the spirit and excitement of our mission," Zuber said. NASA announced the new names in a press conference Tuesday.

The terms ebb and flow generally refer to the movement of water, especially in relation to Earth's natural tides that are influenced by the?pull of the moon. The two words also describe the relative motion of the GRAIL probes, which will vary in distance with the moon's gravitational pull.

"While we feel the ebb and flow of our tides, our twins will undergo nearly the same motion as they study our lunar neighbor," said Jim Green, who leads NASA's planetary science division in Washington, DC.

First prize

According to NASA, about 900 classrooms with more than 11,000 students from 45 states ? as well as Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia ? suggested names. The contest was open to U.S. students in kindergarten through 12th grade and began about a month after the probes were launched last September and ran through Nov. 11.

Zuber and former astronaut Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, selected served as the contest's judges.

"With submissions from all over the United States and even some from abroad, there were a lot of great entries to look over," said Ride, who is now president and CEO of Sally Ride Science in San Diego. "This contest generated a great deal of excitement in classrooms across America, and along with it an opportunity to use that excitement to teach science."

As their first prize for naming Ebb and Flow, the Dickinson students won the first pick of where to point MoonKam, a small camera on board each of the Grail probes. [Photos From NASA's Moon Gravity Mission]

MoonKam, or Moon Knowledge Acquired by Middle school students, is NASA's first instrument to fly on a planetary mission fully-dedicated to education and public outreach. Managed by Sally Ride Science, MoonKam will provide thousands of fifth- to eighth-grade students the chance to select areas on the lunar surface to be photographed.

Ebbing and flowing

MoonKam will start sending back images once Ebb and Flow begin science operations in March.

Since the?two probes entered lunar orbit?two weeks ago, flight controllers have been refining each spacecraft's orbit to reduce the time they take to circle the moon to just under two hours. At the start of the science phase in two months, Ebb and Flow will be in a near-polar, near-circular orbit with an altitude of about 34 miles (55 kilometers).

During their science mission, the washer-machine size spacecraft will transmit radio signals precisely defining the distance between them. As they fly over areas of greater and lesser gravity caused by visible features such as mountains and craters, as well as masses hidden beneath the lunar surface, the distance between Ebb and Flow will change slightly.

Scientists will use this data to form a high-resolution map of the moon's gravitational field, providing them a better understanding of what is going on below the lunar surface. This information will increase knowledge of how Earth and its rocky neighbors in the inner solar system developed into the diverse worlds they are today.
