NFL: Shoulder discomfort limits Tom Brady at practice but New Enland Patriots quarterback is expected to play Sunday against Buffalo Bills

Tom Brady participated in practice Thursday on a limited basis because of a left shoulder injury.

The New England quarterback had missed Wednesday's session, but the team said his absence was not injury-related.

Comcast SportsNet reported that same day Brady had X-rays to check for a separated left shoulder and was told he was "all set." Patriots spokesman Stacey James said Thursday: "If there was an injury then it would be on the injury report."

Brady was listed on Thursday's report as having participated on a limited basis with the shoulder injury. He's expected to play Sunday for the Patriots, who can lock up home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs with a win or tie against Buffalo. Brady landed on his shoulder with 1:40 left Saturday when he was tackled by Kevin Burnett in a 27-24 win over Miami.

Broncos: Safety Brian Dawkins watched practice from the sideline, unable to participate for a second day because of a neck injury that has left him questionable for Sunday's game against Kansas City. He's been sidelined for all but one quarter in the last two weeks, when Denver has given up 40 and 41 points in losses to Buffalo and New England. Coach John Fox described Dawkins' availability as day to day.

Cowboys: With tape still wrapped around his bruised throwing hand after practice, quarterback Tony Romo insists he'll be ready to play Sunday against the New York Giants. "Each day it's getting a

little bit better," he said. "We'll be good to go this weekend." Romo wore the protective wrap on his swollen right hand, the one he banged on a defender's helmet on the opening series Saturday against Philadelphia. The Cowboys-Giants game will decide the NFC East title.

Giants: Defensive end Osi Umenyiora is optimistic but uncertain about his status for Sunday against Dallas. He's missed the past four games with a high ankle sprain but has practiced on a limited basis this week.

Steelers: Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger doesn't want his sprained left ankle to keep him out of the regular-season finale Sunday against Cleveland. "As long as I can deal with pain, I'll be out there," he said. Roethlisberger, who sat out the Steelers' win Saturday against St. Louis, fully participated in practice again. He said the ankle, sprained Dec. 8 against the Browns, was "a little sore."

Vikings: Running back Adrian Peterson has scheduled surgery to repair his left knee. Dr. James Andrews will perform the operation Friday in Birmingham, Ala., six days after Peterson tore the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his knee against Washington. The Vikings have said they expect him to be ready for next year's opener.

Saints: Running back Pierre Thomas was fined $7,500 for a touchdown celebration in which he placed a bow on a football and gave it to a fan against Atlanta on Monday night. He also violated NFL policies by wearing Christmas-themed green-and-red tape on his Saints uniform, and his fine for that was $5,000.

Muslim, Christians clash in southern Egypt (AP)

CAIRO ? Around 200 Coptic Christians and Muslims clashed in a southern Egyptian province after a drawing depicting the Prophet Muhammad was posted on a local Christian student's Facebook page.

Troops sealed off several flashpoint villages after angry residents in the province of Assiut, 200 miles (320 kilometers) south of Cairo, burnt seven Coptic homes in reaction to the drawing.

Muslims generally oppose any depiction of the prophet, even favorable, for fear it could lead to idolatry. This particular drawing depicted four women asking the prophet's hand in marriage.

The strife began late Thursday when four homes belonging to relatives of the Coptic student were burned.

Villagers burned another three homes belonging to Copts in nearby villages on Friday. Copts comprise around 10 percent of Egypt's population.

Legal History Blog: Heen on Engendering Life Insurance

Mary L. Heen, University of Richmond School of Law, has posted From Coverture to Contract: Engendering Insurance on Lives, which appeared in the Yale Journal of Law & Feminism 23 (2011):335.? Here is the abstract:
In the 1840s, state legislatures began modifying the law of marital status to ease the economic distress of widows and children at the family breadwinner's death. Insurance-related exceptions to the common law doctrine of "marital unity" under coverture permitted married women to enter into insurance contracts and protected life insurance proceeds from their husbands' creditors.

These early insurance-related statutory exceptions to coverture introduced an important theoretical question that persisted for the rest of the nineteenth century - and into the next - as broader legal and social reforms took hold. How could equality of contract for married women be reconciled with the traditional dependencies of the home? Equality of contract also introduced the practical economic problem of how the lives of women could be valued apart from their husbands when the law otherwise enforced their economic dependency.

The theoretical and practical issues were resolved for life insurance and annuity contracts, the Article argues, by an increased emphasis on "natural" differences between men and women when those differences comported with traditional gender status hierarchies and dependencies. Gender-distinct mortality tables and higher rates for coverage of women first appeared in annuity contracts used to fund lifetime financial support independent of or as a substitute for marital rights. Gender-merged tables and unisex rates generally prevailed, however, in life insurance contracts used to protect wives and children from the family breadwinner's death, a more traditional pattern of household dependency. Gender-distinct rates thus tempered, in both symbolic and practical/economic terms, the equality of contract recognized by the statutory exceptions to coverture. The selective adoption of gender-distinct insurance rates during the first wave of woman's rights activism illustrates the role played by marketplace contracts in reinforcing the traditional status relationships and dependencies of the home.

Hilary Duff relocating to Canada with hubby Mike Comrie??

THE DIRTY ARMY: Nik, while I was listening to the radio I was shocked to hear the news that Mike Comrie and Hilary are thinking of relocating to Canada once the baby arrives.? Duff: ?I?m not the first person in Hollywood to have a baby. Other people have found a way to deal with it and I think I will, too. If it gets too much, we pack up and move, I guess. Mike and I talk about that sometimes. I don?t know? Toronto? Maybe Edmonton!? Hilary?s doesn?t want her child to experience the chase from the paparazzi that she deals with on a daily basis in Hollywood.? I know I?m not the only one who thinks this is the most retarded decision ever (if it?s even true). I?d rather have my child grow up in a high class environment then be around a bunch of low class bottle rats. I?ve been to Deadmonton a lot, its a dirty, smelly, over all a failure of a city. Its a murder capital for crying out loud. Drugs are everywhere! I know drugs are in every city but Deadmonton has it bad. Like come on. Your thoughts on this Nik?

My daughter Press will never date their kid, so its best they move to Deadmonton. Mike is family money so they do whatever his family tells them.- nik

U2 has the edge: Band had 2011's highest-grossing tour (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? U2 is No. 1 when it comes to touring. The band had the highest-grossing tour both in North America and worldwide in 2011.

Bono, the Edge and company grossed $156 million in North America on the strength of 1.7 million tickets sold, according to Pollstar, which covers the concert industry. They grossed $231.9 million worldwide off 2.39 million tickets.

Rounding out the top five highest-grossing touring acts in North America were Taylor Swift ($97.7 million), Kenny Chesney ($84.6 million), Lady Gaga ($63.7 million) and Bon Jovi ($57.1 million).

As for the worldwide top five, U2 were followed by the reunited Take That ($224 million), Bon Jovi ($148.8 million), Swift ($104.2 million) and Roger Waters ($103.6 million). Tickets on U2's 360 Degrees tour sold for an average of $97.15 worldwide and $91.67 in North America.

The year's top 25 biggest tours grossed a combined $2.1 billion worldwide, which is roughly the same as in 2010. In North America, there was a 4 percent dip among the top 25, which grossed $1.19 billion.

Still, the entire concert industry had a 15 percent increase in ticket sales compared with 2010, despite 20 percent fewer reported shows, according to Billboard.

U2's success in 2011 was bolstered by the rescheduling of postponed concert dates from 2010 due to a back injury frontman Bono suffered that year.

Cheetah the chimp from 1930s Tarzan flicks dies (AP)

PALM HARBOR, Fla. ? A Florida animal sanctuary says Cheetah the chimpanzee sidekick in the Tarzan movies of the early 1930s has died at age 80.

The Suncoast Primate Sanctuary in Palm Harbor announced that Cheetah died Dec. 24 of kidney failure.

Sanctuary outreach director Debbie Cobb on Wednesday told The Tampa Tribune ( http://bit.ly/rRuTeJ) that Cheetah was outgoing, loved finger painting and liked to see people laugh. She says he seemed to be tuned into human feelings.

Based on the works of author Edgar Rice Burroughs, the Tarzan stories, which have spawned scores of books and films over the years, chronicle the adventures of a man who was raised by apes in Africa.

Cheetah was the comic relief in the Tarzan films that starred American Olympic gold medal swimmer Johnny Weissmuller. Cobb says Cheetah came to the sanctuary from Weissmuller's estate sometime around 1960.

Cobb says Cheetah wasn't a troublemaker. Still, sanctuary volunteer Ron Priest says that when the chimp didn't like what was going on, he would throw feces.

Phoenix area students aim for college credit

by Mary Beth Faller - Dec. 27, 2011 12:00 AM
The Republic | azcentral.com

A growing number of Valley students are earning community-college credit for courses they take at their high schools through dual-enrollment classes.

Enrollment in high-school dual-enrollment courses increased nearly 7 percent in the 2010-11 school year compared with the year before, and was up nearly 15 percent from five years ago, according to statistics released this month by the Maricopa Community Colleges district office.

In dual enrollment, students take courses in their regular high school that also earn credits toward a community-college degree -- usually three credits per semester.

The key is that the high-school teacher must meet the qualifications of community-college faculty, usually requiring a master's degree and several years of work experience.

Students in district, charter and private high schools pay $76 per credit to one of the 10 community colleges, and the credits are transferable to all in-state universities.

"Dual enrollment is a win-win for so many reasons," said Daniel Corr, vice president of academic affairs at Scottsdale Community College. "It does away with the 'lost' senior year, where the student has enough credits and is waiting to graduate. It keeps them focused on academics, and they get an orientation to the rigors of college work.

"It saves money for them and their parents because the credits are transferable," Corr said. "And it allows high-school faculty to teach upper-level courses.

"Community college is not the 13th grade," he said. "There's a different mind-set and a different expectation of independence on the student's part."

As good as Advanced Placement

A recent study from the National Center for Postsecondary Research at Columbia University found that dual-enrollment participation has as much of a positive effect on college enrollment and completion as Advanced Placement coursework.

The study, which looked at high-school seniors in Florida, found that dual-enrolled students were more likely than AP students to enroll in a two-year college first, but both groups earned bachelor's degrees at similar rates.

Advanced Placement and dual-enrolled courses are typically higher-level classes. There are about 30 AP courses in high school, and students must pass an end-of-course exam.

Transferable credit depends on the score of the AP exam, typically three credits for a score of 3 or higher on a scale of 0-5. Students pay only for the exam, usually about $90.

The Maricopa Community Colleges offer more than 570 dual-enrolled courses -- both academic and occupational.

Credit is achieved by passing the course, and students usually earn six credits for a yearlong course, which costs $456.

The colleges tweaked the dual-enrollment catalog for this year, eliminating some courses and adding others, as well as streamlining the administrative process for high schools.

"Our goal is to make it easier for the high schools, the parents and the students," said Maria Harper-Marinick, vice chancellor for academic and student affairs for the college system.

Early College program

A second recent study from the National Center for Postsecondary Research found higher rates of university attendance and completion for students who took their dual-enrolled courses on the college campus, compared with students who took them at their high school.

In Maricopa County, few dual-enrolled courses are offered on the college campuses.

One exception is Early College. A few high schools in the Valley offer this two-year program, in which students spend half the day at their high schools, then go to a nearby community-college campus and take a set course of study, usually two classes per semester.

After high-school graduation, the students typically need only one more year of community college to earn a degree.

Cactus Shadows High School in the Cave Creek Unified School District offers Early College and will have its second group of graduates in May. The students attend the nearby Paradise Valley Community College Black Mountain campus.

Lauren Burcar, 16, a junior at Cactus Shadows, is in the Early College program and sees a big difference when she switches to PVCC Black Mountain after lunch.

"It's so much more professional than a high-school campus," she said. "The kids in my class are more advanced, and I feel like I get the information from my teachers better.

"It's pretty much all up to you. And the teacher has to get your permission to show your grades to your parents."

Cave Creek Superintendent Debbi Burdick said that in-state universities lock in their current tuition rate when the students begin Early College in his or her junior year of high school.

"It's a great advantage in a difficult economy for parents who want to give their kids a head start," she said.

Analysis: China investment wave unlikely to swamp EU (Reuters)

VENICE (Reuters) ? The sign in a boutique selling glass hand-crafted on the Venetian island of Murano betrays an uncertain grasp of English. But the owner is very sure who is to blame for the tough times confronting the 700-year-old local glassmaking industry.

"Everything in this shop is not made in China," it proclaims. A few doors away, imported Murano lookalikes sell for much less. To the untrained eye, they appear identical.

With Europe drowning in debt and flirting with recession, China's influence can only rise further. Euro zone governments would love Beijing to plough more of its $3.2 trillion in foreign-exchange reserves into their bonds.

China is also likely to chip in with a loan to the International Monetary Fund to provide a financing backstop in case Italy and Spain are shut out of the bond markets.

Last week's $3.5 billion acquisition by China Three Gorges Corp of the Portuguese government's stake in utility EDP (EDP.LS) is also a sign of things to come.

Financiers turn instinctively to fast-growing China as they try to flush out buyers for assets that are going on the block as European governments, banks and companies pay down debt.

But, despite Chinese leaders' expressing interest in diversifying the country's overseas asset base away from government paper, analysts do not expect a sea change in China's traditionally cautious approach to expanding in Western markets. Africa and Asia are likely to remain China's top targets for now.

"There are going to be opportunities, but we're not going to see China buying up Europe," said Thilo Hanemann, research director at the Rhodium Group, an investment advisory and strategic planning firm in New York.

TREADING SOFTLY

There are many reasons for the wariness.

Lengthy delays in obtaining the approval of regulators in Beijing put Chinese companies at a disadvantage in mergers and acquisitions when the seller wants a quick deal. Companies lack the management skills to integrate overseas acquisitions. And, perhaps most importantly, prospects are much brighter at home than they are in Europe.

"If you compare the rates of growth in China and in Europe, are you sensible buying into a brand that's seen its best years of growth? said Edward Radcliffe, a partner in Shanghai with Vermillion, an M&A advisory boutique that focuses on cross-border China deals.

Still, he said some larger Chinese groups, both state-owned and private, had started to explore opportunities in Europe and the United States.

The 27-member European Union is China's biggest export market. But foreign direct investment (FDI) has badly lagged, totaling $8 billion by the EU's reckoning or $12 billion on China's count - less than 0.2 percent of total FDI in the EU, according to Rhodium.

The firm has kept its own tally since 2003, but its total of $15 billion through mid-2011, though greater than the official data, is still small.

Hanemann said he was sure 2012 would see deals in Europe in technology and consumer products to enable Chinese firms to climb the value ladder and build their domestic market share.

"Ultimately, Chinese companies have to become true multinationals, like Japanese and Korean firms before them," he said. "Over the longer term, there's no reason to believe that China is going to take a different path."

But he was skeptical whether most Chinese companies would be able to seize the opportunities that were likely to crop up in the coming year. To do so, they would have to manage public perceptions in Europe and obtain quick regulatory approval at home.

"There are a lot of deals that the Chinese cannot take on. If the Chinese government sees a company making a bid for troubled assets that risks provoking a political backlash in Europe, I think they'd step in to make sure there's no embarrassment for the Chinese side."

POLITICAL OVERLAY

The failure of Chinese firms to buy Saab, the Swedish car maker that was declared bankrupt last week, was a telling example of the difficulties facing Chinese investors, Hanemann said.

But the picture is not black and white. After all, Volvo, another Swedish car maker, was successfully acquired by a Chinese rival from Ford Motor Co in 2010.

Christine Lambert-Goue, managing director in Beijing at Invest Securities China, said companies were not looking mainly for outright acquisitions but for brands, patents and technology that would bolster their position at home.

"Companies are only ready to pay for assets from Europe that will enable them to gain market share in China," she said.

Investment in Europe will take off eventually, but a deteriorating political climate represents an obstacle in the short term, said Jonathan Holslag of the Brussels Institute of Contemporary China Studies.

The EU, like the United States, is talking tough about Chinese "state capitalism" and is crafting a more assertive trade policy to counter what it sees as a playing field tilted against foreign companies.

For its part, Beijing smells protectionism in the air in response to its growing economic clout.

"The European Union is disappointed with the reluctance of Beijing to open its economy further, whereas Beijing complains about Europe being too reluctant to share its knowledge or to allow Chinese investors to expand their presence in important sectors like infrastructure," Holslag said.

And if Europe fails to snap out of its economic malaise, the risk is that a super-competitive China will be made a scapegoat.

"The more governments are confronted with high unemployment figures, the more we will start to see China as a challenger rather than as a savior," Holslag said.

13 found dead in truck in eastern Mexico: local media (Reuters)

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) ? Thirteen bodies were found in an abandoned truck in eastern Mexico on Sunday, local media reported, as a turf war between drug cartels spreads far from the border with the United States.

The truck was found during a routine security patrol near the border between the eastern states of Veracruz, a major oil-producing region, and Tamaulipas, local media said, citing state officials.

Messages left at the site suggested the dead were killed in a rivalry between criminal gangs, local media said.

Violent drug cartels that have long menaced Mexico's northern border with the United States have moved into states like Veracruz as they battle rivals for control of drug routes and other criminality.

On Thursday, three American citizens were killed in Veracruz when gunmen attacked the bus in which they were traveling.

On Friday, the tortured bodies of ten people were found in Veracruz as a turf war between the Zetas gang and Gulf drug cartels intensifies.

In September, 35 bodies were dumped along a downtown highway in the Veracruz city of Boca del Rio.

More than 45,000 people have been killed in drug violence since President Felipe Calderon took office in December 2006. (Reporting by Patrick Rucker; editing by Todd Eastham)

New device could bring optical information processing

Friday, December 23, 2011

Researchers have created a new type of optical device small enough to fit millions on a computer chip that could lead to faster, more powerful information processing and supercomputers.

The "passive optical diode" is made from two tiny silicon rings measuring 10 microns in diameter, or about one-tenth the width of a human hair. Unlike other optical diodes, it does not require external assistance to transmit signals and can be readily integrated into computer chips.

The diode is capable of "nonreciprocal transmission," meaning it transmits signals in only one direction, making it capable of information processing, said Minghao Qi (pronounced Chee), an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at Purdue University.

"This one-way transmission is the most fundamental part of a logic circuit, so our diodes open the door to optical information processing," said Qi, working with a team also led by Andrew Weiner, Purdue's Scifres Family Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

The diodes are described in a paper to be published online Thursday (Dec. 22) in the journal Science. The paper was written by graduate students Li Fan, Jian Wang, Leo Varghese, Hao Shen and Ben Niu, research associate Yi Xuan, and Weiner and Qi.

Although fiberoptic cables are instrumental in transmitting large quantities of data across oceans and continents, information processing is slowed and the data are susceptible to cyberattack when optical signals must be translated into electronic signals for use in computers, and vice versa.

"This translation requires expensive equipment," Wang said. "What you'd rather be able to do is plug the fiber directly into computers with no translation needed, and then you get a lot of bandwidth and security."

Electronic diodes constitute critical junctions in transistors and help enable integrated circuits to switch on and off and to process information. The new optical diodes are compatible with industry manufacturing processes for complementary metal-oxide-semiconductors, or CMOS, used to produce computer chips, Fan said.

"These diodes are very compact, and they have other attributes that make them attractive as a potential component for future photonic information processing chips," she said.

The new optical diodes could make for faster and more secure information processing by eliminating the need for this translation. The devices, which are nearly ready for commercialization, also could lead to faster, more powerful supercomputers by using them to connect numerous processors together.

"The major factor limiting supercomputers today is the speed and bandwidth of communication between the individual superchips in the system," Varghese said. "Our optical diode may be a component in optical interconnect systems that could eliminate such a bottleneck."

Infrared light from a laser at telecommunication wavelength goes through an optical fiber and is guided by a microstructure called a waveguide. It then passes sequentially through two silicon rings and undergoes "nonlinear interaction" while inside the tiny rings. Depending on which ring the light enters first, it will either pass in the forward direction or be dissipated in the backward direction, making for one-way transmission. The rings can be tuned by heating them using a "microheater," which changes the wavelengths at which they transmit, making it possible to handle a broad frequency range.

Miami Dolphins Talking Points: The first responsibility for the new coach? Sell tickets

A trio of Dolphins talking points to jump start your Thursday:

1. The first responsibility for the Dolphins? new head coach? Sell tickets.

It?s no secret that the Dolphins have had trouble at the gate this year, as the team has been forced to buy its own tickets to avoid local TV blackouts for five of seven home games. But how bad is their ticket situation right now? According to figures compiled by the Sports Business Journal, pretty bad.

Overall, NFL attendance has increased by 0.1 percent this year. But after five home games, the Dolphins had an average attendance of 59,246, a 13.8 percent decrease from last year (68,755). That?s the second-biggest drop in the NFL, ahead of only the Cincinnati Bengals, who have dropped 20.6 percent in attendance despite a surprising playoff push under rookie QB Andy Dalton.

The Dolphins are filling Sun Life Stadium to just 78.8 percent capacity, also the second-lowest figure in the league behind Cincinnati (only Cleveland, St. Louis, Tampa Bay and Washington are under 90 percent). The Dolphins have yet to fill the stadium to 98 percent capacity yet this year, and are one of three teams to host a game with less than 75 percent capacity (Cincinnati (three times) and Tampa Bay).

So this won?t be strictly a football hire for Stephen Ross and the Dolphins. The coach?s ability to excite the fan base and sell season tickets will be just as important as his philosophies and X?s and O?s.

2. Brian Billick says Dolphins must resolve front-office structure first.

Billick, the former Ravens coach who has been with Fox and NFL Network the past four seasons, was asked this morning on 560-AM if he has been contacted by the Dolphins about their coaching vacancy.

?No, I haven?t,? he said on The Joe Rose Show. ?We?re a long way from that kind of speculation.?

Billick said the Dolphins have more on their plate than just hiring a head coach. He didn?t mention Carl Peterson by name, but obviously Peterson?s role with the team needs to be resolved (will he be Jeff Ireland?s boss? Will he remain just an advisor?) before a team can hire a coach.

?I think they still have some structuring to do to decide how they want to piece the top end of that organization together, before they can go and approach and sit down and present to any coach to say OK, here?s the partnership that we?re advocating that we can put together,? Billick said.

Billick said he?s never met Ireland before, and while that wouldn?t preclude him from coming to Ireland, he would only take a coaching job if he?s confident in the relationship he would have with the general manager.

?This has become a general manager?s league to a large degree, and a lot of GMs are looking for a guay that I can lock in his room, feed his meals under the door, and just crank out a brilliant game plan,? Billick said. ?Regardless of who Miami wants to pursue ? and this is true of all the other clubs ? you?ve got to pursue a partnership.?

And if you?re wondering if Billick would keep Miami?s defensive staff intact if he were given the job, here?s all you need to know:

?There?s no better defensive coordinator in the league than Mike Nolan,? said Billick, who worked with Nolan as his coordinator from 2002-04 in Baltimore. ?Outstanding vision for the game. There?s no better coach than Mike Nolan, I promise you.?

3. Will Allen deserves a lot of credit for the secondary?s turnaround.

The Dolphins? secondary has been making plenty of big plays lately, with nine interceptions in their last seven games, but Allen doesn?t have one of them. The Dolphins? third cornerback, he has modest stats this year ? 39 tackles, three passes defended and zero interceptions.

Allen, though, deserves a lot of credit for the secondary?s turnaround, particularly for helping the development of young guys such as Vontae Davis, Sean Smith, Nolan Carroll and Jimmy Wilson.

?Will is so smart, he knows everything before it happens,? Smith said. ?He?ll call it out, and you?re nodding your head when he?s doing it, but you?re thinking, ?Nah, no way.? And then it happens, and he?ll come back and explain why. To know somebody out there is thinking like that, it takes our game to another level.?

Allen was a mere afterthought for the Dolphins during training camp. An 11-year veteran, Allen hadn?t played since tearing his ACL in Week 6 of the 2009 season, and although former coach Tony Sparano said Allen was competing with Benny Sapp for the starting nickel job this year, Allen didn?t feel like that was the case.

Allen pulled his hamstring two days into camp, making his situation worse.

?I felt like in training camp I really didn?t get a chance to compete at all,? Allen said Wednesday as the Dolphins prepared to face the Patriots. ?I feel like I didn?t get a fair shot, but that was on me. Maybe I should?ve had myself in better shape.?

Allen was cut by the Dolphins at the end of training camp but re-signed after the Dolphins cut Sapp after the Week 1 meltdown against the Patriots.

Yet Allen has made a big impact on the Dolphins? secondary during the second half of the season. Used only as a third cornerback, he led the Dolphins with seven tackles last week against Buffalo, and batted down a pass, as well.

Allen, 33, isn?t thinking about retirement.

?This is not the end for me by a longshot,? he said. ?The thing I feel the most confident about is that my body feels better now than it has all year.?

Re: kernel panic with randomly reboots on iPhone 4S

If you are using Iphone 4s for multiple processes, then i would be say that the iOS 5 apple OS is presents on your Iphone 4s. In that case, i would be say that your iphone OS is buggy. You need to just try rebooting with an proper way. DO this by pressing the power button for long time. Then remove your iphone 4s battery from its slot. don't put it for few minutes. AFter sone time, put it on proper positions. Then power on your iPhone 4s. This is well for you to start your iPhone 4s for fresh way. Hope you got best result after finishing this process.

Young children whose mothers talk with them more frequently and in more detail about people's thoughts and feelings tend to be better at taking another's perspective than other children of the same age.

That's what researchers from the University of Western Australia found in a new longitudinal study published in the journal Child Development.

"Parents who frequently put themselves in someone else's shoes in conversations with their children make it more likely that their children will be able to do the same," according to Brad Farrant, postdoctoral fellow at the Telethon Institute for Child Health Research at the University of Western Australia, the study's lead author.

To learn more about how we develop the ability to take another's perspective, researchers looked at the influence of the way parents interact with and talk to their children. The two-year study involved more than 120 Australian children between the ages of 4 and 6 at the start of the study, both youngsters with typically developing language and those who were delayed in their acquisition of language. The participants were part of a larger ongoing longitudinal research project.

The children completed tasks designed to assess their language skills, their ability to infer others' beliefs and use these to predict others' behavior, and their ability to flexibly shift between different perspectives. Mothers also reported on the types of language they used with their children.

Among children with typically developing language, the researchers found that moms who talked more often and in greater detail about people's thoughts and feelingscommenting on how another person might react to a particular situation as well as their own feelings about the topic at handhad children with better language skills and better perspective-taking skills. This suggests that mothers' use of this type of language influences their children's language ability and cognitive flexibility, which in turn appears to influence their development of theory of mind, a key component in learning to take another's perspective.

Children with delayed language acquisition were delayed in their development of perspective-taking skillsthough this wasn't necessarily due to moms' use of language. This highlights the role played by language as children develop the ability to take another's perspective.

"Solving the many challenges that the world faces today requires us all to get better at taking the perspective of other people," according to Farrant.

Payroll tax deadlock ends as House caves (AP)

WASHINGTON ? House Republicans on Thursday caved to demands by President Barack Obama, congressional Democrats and fellow Republicans for a short-term renewal of payroll tax cuts for all workers. The breakthrough almost certainly spares workers an average $20 a week tax increase Jan. 1.

After days of wrangling that even Speaker John Boehner acknowledged "may not have been politically the smartest thing in the world," the Ohio Republican abruptly changed course and dropped demands for immediate holiday season talks with the Senate on a full-year measure that all sides said they want. Senate leaders had insisted on the two-month extension to buy time for talks next year.

The House and Senate plan to act on the two-month extension Friday.

House Republicans were under fire from their constituents and GOP establishment figures incensed that they would risk losing the tax cut issue to Democrats at the dawn of the 2012 presidential and congressional election year. House GOP arguments about the legislative process and the "uncertainty" a two-month extension would mean for business were unpersuasive.

"In the end House Republicans felt like they were reenacting the Alamo, with no reinforcements and our friends shooting at us," said Rep. Kevin Brady, R-Texas.

The compromise legislation would renew the tax break through Feb. 29, along with jobless benefits and a "fix" to prevent doctors from absorbing a big cut in Medicare payments. Its $33 billion cost would be covered by an increased fee on mortgages backed by Fannie Mae, and Freddie Mac.

The developments were a clear win for Obama. The payroll tax cut was the centerpiece of his three-month campaign-style drive for jobs legislation that seems to have contributed to an uptick in his poll numbers ? and taken a toll on those of congressional Republicans.

"Because of this agreement, every working American will keep his or her tax cut - about $1,000 for the average family," Obama said in a statement. "That's about $40 in every paycheck. And when Congress returns, I urge them to keep working to reach an agreement that will extend this tax cut and unemployment insurance for all of 2012 without drama or delay."

If the cuts had expired as scheduled, 160 million workers would have seen a 2 percentage point increase in their Social Security taxes. And up to 2 million people without jobs for six months would start losing unemployment benefits averaging $300 a week.

The GOP retreat ends a tense standoff in which Boehner's House Republicans came under great pressure to agree to the short-term extension passed by the Senate on Saturday. The speaker was initially open to the idea, but rank-and-file Republicans revolted, and the House instead insisted on immediate talks on the year-long measure passed by the House, which contains curbs to unemployment insurance and other ideas backed by conservatives ? as well as deeper spending cuts to pay for the full-year cost.

After Senate leaders tried but failed to match the House's goal for a full-year pact, the chamber on Saturday instead gave sweeping approval for the two-month extension of the payroll tax cut, jobless benefits and doctors' Medicare fees that otherwise would have been cut 27 percent. The House had just days before passed a full-year extension that included a series of conservative policy prescriptions unpalatable to Obama and congressional Democrats.

Obama, Republicans and congressional Democrats all said they preferred a one-year extension but the politics of achieving that eluded them. All pledged to start working on that in January.

"Has this place become so dysfunctional that even when we agree to things we can't do it?" Obama asked. "Enough is enough.".

The top Senate Republican, Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, was a driving force behind Thursday's agreement, imploring Boehner to accept the deal that McConnell and Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid had struck last week and passed with overwhelming support in both parties.

"There remain important differences between the parties on how to implement these policies, and it is critical that we protect middle-class families from a tax increase while we work them out," Reid said after Boehner's announcement.

The breakthrough emerged as a firewall erected by tea party-backed House Republicans crumbled Thursday.

"I don't think that my constituents should have a tax increase because of Washington's dysfunction," said freshman Rep. Sean Duffy, R-Wis.

The Republican establishment, too, put new pressure on House Republicans to compromise.

The 2008 GOP presidential nominee, John McCain, former Bush administration confidant Karl Rove and The Wall Street Journal editorial page were among conservative voices urging House Republicans to retreat.

Just hours before he announced the breakthrough, Boehner had made the case for a year-long extension. But on a brief late afternoon conference call, he informed his colleagues it was time to yield.

"He said that as your leader, you've in effect asked me to make decisions easy and difficult and I'm making my decision right now," said Rep. Jack Kingston, R-Ga., paraphrasing Boehner's comments.

Kingston said the conference call lasted just minutes and Boehner did not give anyone time to respond.

There was still carping among tea party freshmen upset that GOP leaders had yielded.

"Even though there is plenty of evidence this is a bad deal for America ... the House has caved yet again to the president and Senate Democrats," said Rep. Tim Huelskamp, R-Kan. "We were sent here with a clear set of instructions from the American people to put an end to business as usual in Washington, yet here we are being asked to sign off on yet another gimmick."

Almost forgotten in the firestorm is that McConnell and Boehner had extracted a major victory last week, winning a provision that would require Obama to make a swift decision on whether to approve construction of the Keystone XL oil pipeline, which would bring Canadian oil to the U.S. and create thousands of construction jobs. To block the pipeline, Obama would have to declare that is not in the nation's interest.

Obama wanted to put the decision off until after the 2012 election.

House Republicans did win one concession in addition to a promise that Senate Democrats would name negotiators on the one-year House measure: a provision to ease concerns that the 60-day extension would be hard for payroll processing companies to implement.

'Alien' eggs benefit mockingbirds

ScienceDaily (Dec. 20, 2011) ? Mockingbirds rarely remove the 'alien' eggs parasitic cowbirds lay in their nests because keeping them dilutes the risk of their own eggs being attacked.

The study, by Oxford University and Argentinean scientists, examined the behaviour of the chalk-browed mockingbird (Mimus saturninus) which is parasitized by the shiny cowbird (Molothrus bonariensis) in Argentina.

A report of the research is published in this week's Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

Shiny cowbirds regularly visit mockingbird nests and attack and puncture any eggs they find there -- damaged eggs are later removed by the mockingbird host. During these visits cowbirds will often lay their own eggs in the nest for mockingbirds to hatch and bring up alongside their own chicks.

Whilst mockingbirds will mob an attacking cowbird, once an alien egg has been laid in their nest they will usually accept it -- even though it looks very different from their own eggs.

The researchers recorded video of 130 cowbird visits to see what happened to the eggs in mockingbird nests over three breeding seasons. They experimentally manipulated clutch compositions to compare host egg survival in clutches with different numbers of cowbird eggs. They found that mockingbird eggs were more likely to survive a puncture attack when more cowbird eggs were present in the nest.

Computer simulations showed that this is likely to be a widespread phenomenon, and that, paradoxically, the greater the local density of parasites, the stronger the benefit hosts get from the presence of parasite eggs.

'It seems that the advantage mockingbirds gain from leaving these alien eggs in their nests is that they attract some of the destructive behaviour in later cowbird visits, and this benefit outweighs the cost of later having to rear the cowbird nestlings,' said Professor Alex Kacelnik from Oxford University's Department of Zoology, an author of the report. 'This is likely to be because, unlike other parasitic birds such as the cuckoo, mockingbird chicks do well in competition with their parasitic nest-mates -- fledging at rates similar to those of unparasitized broods.'

Of 347 mockingbird nests studied 89% were parasitized with one or more cowbird eggs, 35% receiving more than three, and 16% more than five (typically, they received around three).

'It might be expected that this high rate of parasitism would encourage a host to evolve more effective anti-parasite defences,' said Ros Gloag from Oxford University's Department of Zoology, an author of the report. 'In fact, the opposite is probably true: the higher the intensity of parasitism, the higher the frequency of puncturing attacks and the greater the importance of diluting this risk. Thus, hosts benefit more by not rejecting parasite eggs when there are more parasites around.'

Sub-Saharan Africa and the Arab Spring

After a groundswell of anti-government protests enveloped many corners of North Africa a year ago, observers around the world began to wonder how far this democratic contagion would spread. In particular, many wondered whether northern Africa would inspire its neighbors in sub-Saharan Africa, which share many of the same demographic characteristics found in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), including a large percentage of unemployed young people, high food prices and years of oppression and unrealized opportunity at the hand of often-brutal dictators. At the time, political commentators in several corners of Africa seemed optimistic that the Arab Spring would indeed spread southward.

Sure enough, in a continent marred by decades of dictatorship, military coups and fraudulent elections, sub-Saharan Africa in 2011 witnessed an unprecedented number of parliamentary and presidential elections -- in 17 countries -- as well as the creation of a new state, South Sudan. On Dec. 11, Cote d?Ivoire elected a parliament for the first time in more than a decade. The elections, though easily won by President Alassane Ouattara?s party after followers of former President Laurent Gbagbo decided to boycott, were nevertheless noticeable for the absence of deep violence and conflict that engulfed last year?s presidential election. ...

And Lunch Turned Into Dinner ?

I instantly bonded with Hitch in 1998 when I tagged along to an interview he did with a friend of mine over lunch. The friend left after an hour, but we stayed at the restaurant talking about politics, literature, and history. Lunch turned into dinner, and finally his wife, Carol, summoned him home on the grounds that 10 hours straight of talking to anyone was more than enough for one sitting. This set the stage for an abiding friendship based on such marathon conversations.
